FULL ORGANIZATION OF THE DIOCESE;

HELD IN

ST. PAUL'S CHURCH, VERGENNES,

ON THE

15TH AND 16TH DAYS OF SEPTEMBER,

THIS being the day and place appointed for the meeting of the annual convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Vermont, the bishop, clergy, and laydelegates from the parishes assembled in St. Paul's Church, and at 9 o'clock, A. M., the convention was called to order by the Rt. Rev, the bishop of the diocese, who took the chair, ex officio; the Rev. William Henry Hoit being secretary.

On calling the list of the clergy entitled to seats in the convention, and of the parishes entitled to representation therein, a quorum of both clergy and laity was found to be present, and the convention was duly organized.

On motion, resolved, That clergymen of the Protestant Episcopal Church, not canonically entitled to seats in this convention, and all candidates for Holy Orders in this Church, who may be present, be, and hereby are, invited to attend the sittings of the convention.

The convention proceeded to the choice of secretary and treasurer, and after balloting, as the canon directs, the Rev. Wm. Henry Hoit was declared to be duly elected secretary, and Nahum Parker, Esq., treasurer.

On motion, the convention adjourned to attend Divine service, and to meet again at half-past 3 o'clock, P. M.

Divine service was then attended, morning prayer being read by the Rev. Josiah Perry, the sermon preached by the Rev. J. W. Diller, and Deacon's orders conferred upon Mr. Thomas P. Tyler, and Priest's orders upon the Rev. E. H. Sayles, with the administration of the holy communion, by the Rt. Rev. the Bishop.

The convention met according to adjournment.

The Rev. Louis McDonald, not present in the morning, appeared and took his seat in the convention.

Messrs. Cyrus Booth and Wm. T. Parker, from St. Paul's Church, Vergennes; Dorastus Wooster, Nahum Parker, and Wightman Chapman, from St. Stephen's Church, Middlebury; and D. W. C. Clarke, from St. Thomas' Church, Brandon, presented certificates of their being duly appointed delegates to the convention, and took their seats therein. The Rt. Rev. Bishop of the diocese then delivered his annual

ADDRESS.

BELOVED FRIENDS AND BRETHREN:

We have once more come together, under favor of Divine Providence, to hear of the condition and prospects of that portion of the Redeemer's Church which he has committed to our especial care. It has not been in my power to perform as much Episcopal duty since we last met, as I have usually been enabled to discharge; nor have I, on any former occasion, had so little to present before you, either with respect to the doings of the past or the prospects of the future. In the vain effort to effect for the diocese what I thought the interests of the Church required, my own fortunes have been wrecked, my plans rendered abortive, my hopes crushed; and the lesson of patient submission which, by the blessing of God, I have learned, I trust, by heart, has left me without any spirit of enterprise, to call on you for the feeling of sympathy, or the ardor of exertion. The progress of the Saviour's kingdom within our borders certainly yields no ground for
