"The greatest achievement amongst these three books is the treatise on architecture, a really masterly effort of selection, for in truth it is no easy matter to pick out, from the mass of traditions and influences which make the architectural criterion, those leading aspects of form and thought which will guide an untechnical reader into the way of knowing how to begin to know."-The Art Journal, London.

"It contains for the layman an education in architecture."-The Lamp, New York.

"This handbook will repay study-the numerous photographic illustrations being in themselves a lesson in the history and capabilities of the art."―The Times.

"This interesting and instructive volume, with its admirably chosen illustrations of ancient and modern pieces of sculpture, its skilful criticisms of them, whether in themselves or in their ornamental effect, and its cultured survey of the history of the fine art with which it deals, cannot but prove helpful to any reader who wishes to form well-reasoned opinions on its subject. The volume deserves a place in every well-furnished library."-The Scotsman.

The Appreciation of Pictures.

for the Artist, Student, and Connoisseur. By RUSSELL STURGIS,
M.A. With 73 full-page Photographs after famous pictures.
Large 8vo, art linen. 7s. 6d. net.

This work, which supplements the two former volumes on Architecture and
Sculpture, deals historically with Pictures, and furnishes a basis for a thorough
understanding of them. It differs from "Pictorial Composition" in that
Mr. Poore treats of pictures as an artist and not as a critic.

"This book is so well founded in the study of the masters, old and new; so faithful to the true idea of the graphic arts, and so well written, that it could be read with interest and sympathy by anybody who loves paint."-The Scotsman.

Second Edition, revised. With 5 Collotype Plates and 35 smaller Illustrations reproduced from Japanese Paintings, Photographs and Sketches of Instruments, etc. Demy 4to, half morocco, gilt. The volume contains a number of photographs of native performers and instruments."The Musical Times.

"This work contains so much that appeals to the artist and the musician and the student of musical history that it is scarcely possible to do justice to all the aspects of interest presented. The volume worthily honours the music of a people so eminent in artistic gifts and accomplishments."-The Saturday Review.

The Decorative Art of Japan.

By Sir FRANCIS PIGGOTT, Chief Justice of Hong Kong, Author of
"The Music and Musical Instruments of Japan.' Containing 130
pages of text, with 177 Illustrations, including 32 full-page Plates,
of which I are finely printed in colours. Quarto, bound in
coloured linen after the Japanese manner.

Sir Francis Piggott's long study of the monuments of Japanese art in Japan, and of the way in which the native artists work, gives his conclusions peculiar interest and authority. The whole subject of Japanese decoration would require volumes, if it were adequately to be analyzed and illustrated, and in these studies the author has chosen rather to interpret some guiding principles, to illustrate some central characteristics, and to set the inquirer on a path which he may follow to advantage.

Special prominence has been given to temple decoration, which is less known than any other form of Japanese art. The author gives us a glimpse into the atmosphere in which the artists who wrought upon the temples lived-artists who realized, as probably no other artists have ever realized, the place which decoration properly holds in the scheme of existence. He brings, therefore, a thoroughly sympathetic spirit to his analysis of the actual foundations and character of Japanese design, and its triumphs of "conventional naturalism.” He shows, for instance, what wonderful use the Japanese have been able to make of the circle as a figure in decoration; and how waves and clouds have inspired them with endless beautiful forms.

Art Principles in Portrait Photography.

Composition; Treatment of Backgrounds, and the Processes
involved in Manipulating the Plate. By OTTO WALTER BECK.
With 138 Illustrations from special Photographs and Original
Diagrams. Large 8vo, cloth, gilt, 12s. 6d. net.

"The book deals very ably with the limitations and with the possibilities of the camera in portraiture. Too often the photographer has neither received any serious artistic training nor had the opportunity for intelligent study. While I do not think there is any short cut to success in Pictorial Portraiture, the book cannot fail to be most helpful and conducive to good if followed out."Mr. FURLEY LEWIS, F.R.P.S.

"The book contains many hints and suggestions which would be useful to the professional photographer, and intelligently carried out would certainly make the present average photographic portrait more interesting."-Mr. FRED HOLLYER.

Pompeian Decorations.

Illustrated in a Series of Coloured Drawings reproduced by Three-
Colour Process and by many Pencil Drawings, reproduced in half-
tone, accompanied by Descriptive Text. By R. A. BRIGGS,
Architect, F.R.I.B.A. Imperial 4to, cloth, gilt top. 255. net.

The aim of the present publication is to illustrate, by the now perfected threecolour process, and at a moderate cost, what the Pompeian Decorations are really like; and it will be a revelation to those who have not studied the Decorations in situ. The author has made as careful copies as was possible of some of the principal Decorations, which, in many cases, are drawn to scale; and care has been exercised to reproduce the colouring of the originals with the most scrupulous fidelity. The illustrations consist of 27 drawings, of which there are 16 with the actual colourings and decorations reproduced by the threecolour process, of Friezes, Ceilings, Walls, Shrines, Mosaic work, etc. There are 11 drawings by the half-tone process of other subjects, such as Marble Friezes, Tombs, Tables, etc.

The Art of Colour Decoration.

Being an explanation of the purposes to be kept in view and the means of attaining them, by JOHN D. CRACE, F.S.A., Hon. Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and President of the Incorporated Institute of British Decorators. With 15 facsimiles of coloured drawings by the Author, beautifully reproduced in three and four colours, together with numerous half-tone and line illustrations in the text. Royal quarto, cloth, gilt. 30s. net.

The Author's object is to show the Decorator how to approach his subject, and what are his proper aims; to call his attention to certain facts, observance of which will save him many difficulties, and to impress on him that the colourist's first obligation in dealing with architecture is to support or, if need be, make clear the architectural intention; to assist in the recognition at first sight of structural form and stability, whatever other charm of colour or form be provided; and to explain that even good and harmonious colour, if ill distributed, may impair the proportion and beauty of that which it was intended to adorn.

"It is impossible to give any idea by mere description of the beauty and artistic qualities of many of the examples, or the ingenuity and executive skill that make some veritable tours de force of handwriting. The book deserves to be studied, and should prove, in Mr. Day's words, a very mine of suggestions for the inspiration of writers, illuminators, architects, engravers, and the numerous art workers who have to use lettering."-The Westminster Gazette.

"The result is a collection of examples which cannot fail to excite the admiration of any one who is susceptible to the charm of beautiful penmanship."-The Studio.

BUCKLE. Second Edition, revised, containing 80 full-page Plates,
reproduced from photographs, and 45 Illustrations in the text.
Crown 8vo, cloth.
5s. net.

An invaluable Review of the Art and Practice of Embroidery.

"In this volume embroidery is looked at wholly from its practical side; but we need hardly say that the names of the authors ensure that æsthetic discrimination which when applied to the practice of needle-craft raises it to an art. ... There can be no doubt that the joint authorship has given us an ideal handbook, such a good one, indeed, that we do not think it is likely to be supplanted."—Arts and Crafts.

In the present work the public have the benefit of prolonged con-ideration of decorative needlework on the part of this veteran writer, coupled with a mass of practical information contributed by Miss Buckle, whose name is familiar as that of one of the most noted embroiderers of the period. It is worth its weight in gold."-Home Art Work.
