The Rev. Abner W. Brown, M.A.,
Vicar of Pytchley.

LONDON: EDWARDS & HUGHES.

PRICE ONE PENNY.

Edinburgh Printing Company, 12, St David Street, Edinburgh.

CHILDREN'S MONTHLY GARDEN. The size and shape have been altered, in compliance with the wishes of many Subscribers, and a new name has been added, in order that the Volume of 1847 may be an independent, as it is a complete, Work.

The principles, general character, and price, will continue the same. Its leading object will still be, in a mild uncontroversial spirit, such as marks the CHURCH OF ENGLAND, to instil into the Young the principles of her Articles and Prayer-Book, which are the marrow and essence of Scripture; to make them familiar with her history, which is bound up in that of the whole CHURCH OF CHRIST; and to store their minds with the most valuable parts of Scripture Commentary.

Its secondary object will also still be, to convey general Knowledge in union with Religion; to give useful miscellaneous, though not desultory, information; and to encourage a taste for simplc Poetry.

It will be found a purely Church of England Work; and, from the varied, comprehensive, and simple character of its contents, a useful Assistant to Masters, Teachers, and Parents, as well among the Educated Classes as the Cottage Population. Its existence can only be maintained by a very large sale, and the Editor entreats the aid of all who may approve his plan, in promoting the circulation in Schools, Families, and Parishes. Thanking those who kindly contributed to the last Series, he still solicits contributions, especially Parochial Anecdotes of the Young; with the Author's real name and address in addition to the proposed signature.

He humbly relies upon the blessing of Almighty God to direct and prosper this attempt to do good to the Youthful Members of Christ's Flock.

THE EPIPHANY.--(6th January.)

O GOD, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles; mercifully grant, that we, which know thee now by faith, may, after this life, have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Look to Christ with the eyes of your heart.

Gospel for the Day, Matthew ii. 1-12.
"We have seen his star in the East," &c.

THE EPIPHANY means the Appearing, or Being shown to: The Churches in Asia call it "The Theophany," or the time of God's having been shown. It is called among us The Twelfth Day, because, of old, Christmas was called the Greater Epiphany, when God was first shown, or made manifest in the flesh by being born; and the Twelfth Day after was called the Lesser Epiphany, or day of his being shown to the Gentiles as their Saviour. The Germans call it The Day of the Three Kings, or NO. 1.-JAN. 1848.
