right to his own opinions as his own property, but no one has any right to impose those opinions upon another, or force his compliance with them. Mark, we say his own opinions; of course the laws of Jesus are not intended, for they are no man's opinion; but we mean mere opinions about matters concerning which there is no law.

The boast of the day is, "liberty of conscience," and because we sometimes speak, write, or publish, sentiments somewhat detracting from the authority of this humanlyinvented standard, we are accused of intolerance, and being opposed to liberty of conscience. Now we wish to say this is not the case. We advocate liberty of conscience as the right of every man; i. e., it is the right of every man to be at liberty to do that which he says he in his conscience believes he ought to do. But we do not allow that, in religious matters, a man's conscience has the rightful power to decree what ought to be done, nor because a man shall say he believes in his conscience that such and such things are right, that they are therefore right; else we must allow the sayings and doings of heathens, Mahometans, Jews, Catholics, and all the confounding and conflicting sects of christendom as being all equally right while, therefore, we say that every man has a right to the liberty of doing what he judges to be right, we yet claim an equal right to ask, and be asked, "By what authority doest thou these things, and who gave thee that authority?" Yes! every man from "His holiness the pope to the parish clerk. JESUS is our only lawgiver, and therefore when any thing is enjoined by men 66 great and good" though they be, as a law of his kingdom which neither he nor his ambassadors [the apostles] have given, we claim the right to rebel without transgressing; " for where no law is, there is no transgression." Multitudes of these advocates for liberty will do things not commanded, who will sooner risk salvation altogether than obey what is commanded!

In conclusion, let us urge upon every one of you brethren, whose wish is to see the pure and lovely institutions of the immortal Jesus triumph over error, to increase rather than slacken your efforts in this noble cause. The sins of the day are great, and we need to " cry aloud, and spare not," to arm ourselves with the whole armour of God, and with the sword of the Spirit, "which is his word," to wage a determined warfare against the daring invader, antichrist, who has presumed to “ change the times, laws, and ordinances our King.
