It should be understood, that though only a small qualifying test has been imposed in respect to Modern Languages and Geometrical Drawing, a knowledge of them on admission will contribute greatly to a Candidate's future success at the Royal Military Academy.

IV. The Candidates are allowed to answer as many questions as the time allotted to the subject will permit.

V. No Candidate will be admitted unless he obtain an aggregate of at least 2,500 marks.

SYLLABUS OF EXAMINATION IN THE DIFFERENTIAL AND INTEGRAL CALCULUS.

Dfferential Calculus.

The meaning of Differentiation.

The Differentiation of Elementary Functions of one independent variable.

The theorems of Taylor and Maclaurin, with their applications.

The theory of Maxima and Minima, with its applications. The equations to the Tangents, Normals, and Asymptotes of Plane Curves.

The curvature of Plane Curves and their radii of curvature and evolutes.

The Differential Co-efficients of the Arcs and Areas of Plane Curves to rectangular and polar Co-ordinates, and of the surfaces and volumes of solids of revolution.

Integral Calculus.

The meaning of Integration.

The Integration of Elementary Functions.

The Integration of Rational Fractions.

The determination of the lengths and areas of Plane Curves, and of the surfaces and volumes of solids of revolution.

The following Rules were forwarded to each Candidate, prior to the Examination :

Rules to be observed at the Examination.

1. The Examination will commence on each Morning at 10 o'clock, and on each Afternoon at 2 o'clock ; three hours being allowed for each Paper.

An interval of one hour is allowed between the Morning and Afternoon Examinations to prevent the necessity of any Candidate leaving the room during the Examination hours.

2. During the whole of the will be designated by Numbers.

Examination the Candidates
On the first day a Number

will be assigned to each Gent.eman, which will remain the same to the close of the Examination: and he must affix his Number (not his Name) to every Paper which he sends in. A Paper without a Number will not be entitled to Marks: a Paper with the name attached will be rejected.

3. During the Examination, Candidates will not be permitted to speak to one another or to communicate with any Person, except with a Member of the Council of Military Education, or with the Examiner. The Council think it right to give notice that any Candidate infringing this Regulation, or attempting in any way to copy from the Paper of another, or allowing his own to be copied, will be immediately desired to withdraw from the Examination.

If any Candidate wish to communicate with a Member of the Council or with the Examiner, he will hold up his hand, but he will not quit his place on any pretence.

4. At the commencement of each period of Examination, all Candidates presenting themselves are to take their places at once, and the Examination Papers will be brought to them. No Candidate will be allowed to give up his Paper and leave the room within the first half hour, and no Candidate will be permitted to receive an Examination Paper who shall arrive after any other Candidate has quitted the room.

5. The Papers of the Candidates will be collected at the hours above stated by a Member of the Council of Military Education. Should any Candidate, however, have finished his Examination Paper before the hour specified, he may deliver it into the hands of a Member of the Council. The Council cannot be held accountable for any Paper not so delivered..

6. Candidates are to bring with them their Instruments and Drawing Materials (Paper excepted), but no Books, portions of Books, or Papers of any kind, are to be brought into the Examination Room; and should a Candidate have either Books or Papers with him on arrival, he must leave them at the door, where a table will be placed for the purpose. Any breach of this Regulation will lead to the immediate rejection of the Candidate so offending.

Tables of Logarithms will be supplied by the Council.

7. A Report of the Examination will be forwarded to each Candidate.

Twenty-five vacancies at the Royal Military Academy were competed for on this occasion.

The number of Candidates who notified their intention of presenting themselves for Examination was 128, of whom 118 actually attended on the 4th January. One of these was rejected by the Medical Board, and another withdrew from the Examination.

Of the remaining 116 Candidates, 74 were found qualified in every respect, and the names of the 25 highest on the List were submitted to His Royal Highness on the 27th July.

The following Tables contain the number of Candidates examined in each subject, the List of successful Candidates, and the General Report of Marks gained by every Candidate in the subjects he took up.
