The whole number of Academies in the preceding list is 176, being only such as were reported to the Regents conformably to law. There are others not so reported, the number of which we have not been able to ascertain. These Academies receive annual assistance from the State, by the distribution of the proceeds of the Literature Fund.

MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS.

THE NEW YORK STATE MEDICAL SOCIETY.

THIS association consists of about one hundred physicians, from all parts of the State, who are styled "Permanent Members," together with delegates from county medical societies. Stated sessions are held by the Society at Albany, on the first Tuesday of February in each year, and a volume of their Transactions is published annually by the Legislature, as an "Assembly Document." The volume for 1858 is a bulky document of 655 pages.

The museum of this institution is large and valuable; it contains a set of the preparations and models in wax prepared by Towne, of Guy's Hospital, London, which finely illustrate all the exanthematous diseases; also, a set of Thibert's models, together with a large number of wet and dry preparations. This museum may be valued at $25,000. The Chemical and Philosophical Apparatus, embracing the most modern German, French, and American chemical instruments, is valued at $4,000, and belongs to Professor Doremus.

MEDICAL DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO.

The building occupied by this medical college is a stone edifice, situated on the corner of Main and Virginia streets, in the city of Buffalo. It is fiftyfour feet in width by one hundred in depth; four stories high; and contains ample and convenient rooms for dissections, museum, lectures, and all the different departments of medical instruction. The expense of its erection was chiefly defrayed by voluntary contributions of the citizens of Buffalo.

NEW YORK HOSPITAL.

This institution was chartered in 1771, and is one of the oldest and most useful of the kind in this country. It occupies a spacious stone edifice with convenient grounds in the lower part of Broadway, opposite the entrance of Pearl Street; but at the time it was erected it stood in the open country, beyond the streets of the city. The general control of its affairs is vested in a board of twenty-six governors, which also exercises a supervision over the Bloomingdale Lunatic Asylum. This board appoints its own officers and fills its own vacancies.

This institution is situated on the east bank of Hudson River, seven miles from the City Hall, and has attached to it forty acres of land, laid out in gardens, pleasure grounds, and farm lots.
