REMARKS. In this town there are twentyseven public schools, although only twelve districts. In the centre district there is a

3" Latin Grammar School," two "boys' English" schools, one" female high" school, and seven others, besides an "African school." The "centre district is incorporated, and has power to raise money by taxation. It raised 10 this year $2,500. The town raised $4,000 for the support of schools, and $500 for contin15 gent expenses. In the centre district the teachers furnish their own board, and this is true of some of the others; not stated of how many. The amount raised by contribution to prolong common schools, is unknown; but $25 00 it is said, that in most of the districts a school is kept, after the public money is expended, $16 00 from three to six weeks" Besides these, there are the "Worcester County Manual Labor

$4,000 00 High School," a Catholic seminary, and four other private schools. The amount paid for tuition in academies and private schools, is stated at "from $3,700 to $4,000" The average is taken. The length of the private schools, besides those in the districts, is not stated, but, it being strongly inferible, that they are kept all the year, it is so stated in the abstract. As to the average attendance on the schools, and the wages paid per month, no confidence can be expressed, that the true sums are stated; the return respecting wages 6 in sixteen of the districts, being conjectural. In nine others, it is obviously set down in the 72 wrong column. In regard to the average attendance in three districts, it is left uncertain

180 whether the figures belong to one column or

The only reply as to the estimated amount of money paid for tuition in academies and private schools, is "not ascertained."

The statute form of the certificate is altered, both by erasure and interlineation. As altered, the certificate $22 13 states that the town "raised the sum $11 34 of one thousand dollars, to be appropriated at least one dollar to each $1,000 00 scholar from four to sixteen years of age, for the payment of instructors $964 13 solely, in the common schools for the current year."
