NOTES.

a-The German "Handbuch" (sixth edition) gives B x B and with it an analysis to show that by this move Black ultimately obtains a superior game to that of White.

b-Castling was better

c-Again, Castling-K R would appear best.

d-White now turns his attention towards breaking the cen

tre.

e- -The Pawn could not be saved.

f-The initiative move of one of the most brilliant combinations on record. On the strength of this and White's 43 move, this game was considered the most brilliant of the Tourney.

g-If K x B. White would reply with Q x Q (ch), followed by Q to Kt 7 (ch), winning a Rook in addition.

h-Threatening mate.

a—One of Mr. Bird's deviations. The usual move is P to Q 4 or Castles.

b-Castling was probably his best play.

c-An unexpected error, which Mr. Bird, however, is not slow to avail himself of.

d-The coup juste. The play of the two White Knights from this point is admirable.

e-Another pretty piece of finesse. The capture of the Knight is again indirectly prevented by his brother cavalier.

f-White's play throughout this game is of the highest order.
