PREFACE. S many of these reports have been so long out of print as to create a demand which this Company seeks to supply, as its first work, by issuing a complete and uniform edition. Their value and even general utility are fully established and still growing. To the original plan of producing an exact reprint has been added, as follows: First-Head notes were lacking. Second-A table of references, at the foot of each case, to all cases in subsequent volumes of this series, and in the Circuit and District Court Reports, where it has been for any purpose cited. These tables are indexed so far as practicable. Third-More extended notes to those cases which may be deemed leading, or of more general importance. Fourth-Tables of cases, statutes, and constitutions cited in the opinions of the judges. In such tables in this book, references to text writers are included, but citations at the foot are confined to cases in the Federal Courts. At first meager from necessity, they grow in size and value as later volumes are reached. For reprint copy, the reporters' own editions are used, without change, except to cor rect errors. In this book, the old spelling and punctuation are preserved, nothing being changed simply for being an archaism. This plan, for lack of settled usage at the time, is found to be impracticable, and therefore in these matters they will follow modern usage in all subsequent books. This book, but partially composed of federal cases, fails satisfactorily to illustrate the merits of the edition, and perfection is not claimed for it; but the ambition of the publishers will be satisfied only when this entire edition shall be accepted by the profession as practically perfect, not only mechanically, but in the additions noted.
