"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us."

1 mf VAIN are the hopes the sons of men 4 f Jesus, how glorious is Thy grace! Upon their works have built;

Their hearts by nature are unclean,
Their actions full of guilt.

2 mf Silent let Jew and Gentile stand,
Without one vaunting word,
And, humbled low, confess their guilt
Before heaven's righteous Lord.

3 mf No hope can on the law be built
Of justifying grace;

The law that shows the sinner's guilt
Condemns him to his face.

When in Thy name we trust, Our faith receives a righteousness

That makes the sinner just.

And shall we then go on to sin,
That grace may more abound?
cresGreat God, forbid that such a thought
Should in our breast be found!

6mf With Christ the Lord we died to sin;
cres With Him to life we rise,-

To life which, now begun on earth,
Is perfect in the skies.

Too long enthralled to Satan's sway,
cres We now are slaves no more;

f For Christ hath vanquished death and sin,
Our freedom to restore. Amen.

175 "Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?"

ImfHOW few receive, with cordial faith, 4 p Rejected and despised of men,

The tidings which we bring!
How few have seen the arm revealed
Of heaven's eternal King!

2mfThe Saviour comes! No outward 5
Bespeaks His presence nigh; [pomp
No earthly beauty shines in Him
To draw the carnal eye.

3mf Fair as a beauteous tender flower
Amidst the desert grows,
So, slighted by a rebel race,
The heavenly Saviour rose.

ST. MABYN.

Behold a Man of woe!
Grief was His close companion still
Through all His life below.

Yet all the griefs He felt were ours,
Ours were the woes He bore:
Pangs, not His own, His spotless soul
pp With bitter anguish tore.

6 p We held Him as condemned by
An outcast from His God; [Heaven,
While for our sins He groaned, He
Beneath His Father's rod. [bled,

7 mf His sacred blood hath washed our souls
From sin's polluted stain ;

cres His stripes have healed us, and His death
f Revived our souls again. Amen.

"I am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep."

If SOULS of men, why will ye scatter,

Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts why will ye wander From a love so true and deep? 2mf Was there ever kindest shepherd

Half so gentle, half so sweet, As the Saviour, who would have us cres Come and gather round His feet? 3 mf There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in His justice,

Which is more than liberty.

5mf For, the love of God is broader

Than the measures of man's mind;
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind.
6mf There is plentiful redemption

cres

In the blood that has been shed;
There is joy for all the members
In the sorrows of the Head.
Pining souls, come nearer Jesus;
And oh, come not doubting thus,
But with faith that trusts more bravely
His huge tenderness for us.

4 There is no place where earth's sorrows 8 f If our love were but more simple,

Are more felt than up in heaven

There is no place where earth's failings
Have such kindly judgment given.

We should take Him at His word; And our lives would be all sunshine In the sweetness of our Lord. Amen.
