IN issuing the Third Volume of the County Directory for Scotland, the Publishers have to apologise for the unavoidable delay which has occurred in its publication. The mode adopted for procuring information was to furnish the whole Postmasters in Scotland with blank schedules, to be sent to all suitable parties in each district for the purpose of being filled up. In the great majority of instances the necessary returns were promptly made; but in other cases much delay took place, and from some quarters no returns were made at all. For errors resulting from this latter cause neither the Editor nor the Publishers can be responsible, although they have done their best to obviate them. The call for assistance has, however, been so generally responded to, that the Editor and Publishers would be wanting in courtesy if they did not tender their warmest acknowledgments to the nobility, gentry, and professional and trading classes, as well as to the postmasters throughout the country, for their indispensable co-operation and aid. In cases where proper returns have not been received, the places and their Post-towns have been retained, so as to prevent names being inaccurately inserted-a course rendered necessary in order that the principle should be carried out of no name appearing without due authority. By the time that another volume is issued, it is to be hoped that the national character of the work will be so appreciated that no one will hesitate to furnish the needful details. |
