sets of bilge, sanitary and piston cooling pumps, made as plunger pumps and driven from the same crank shaft. The last mentioned pumps suck the cooling water from the pistons and discharge it overboard. Of all these pumps it is only necessary to have one of each running at a time, so that the other can stand as a spare. In addition there is one ballast, pump, made as a rotating pump; one syringe and wash deck pump; one fresh water pump; one fuel oil pump; one refrigerating machine; and one crude oil motor for lighting the ship when in port, when the winches are not working. From this motor can further be driven a little 1-horse power compressor which can pump up the air in the bottles for the auxiliary motor and the Diesel engine can thereby be started.

In the fore edge of the casing there are arranged two daily supply tanks, each able to take the necessary fuel oil for twelve hours' working with full load. These tanks are pumped up alternately, so that the oil has time to precipitate water and impurities before it is used in the motor.

There can be no question but that a great deal of gas is lost past the piston rings in many gas engines. This is especially true where the ends of the ring do not fit closely together. Right here is where the high compression rings made by the Burd High Compression Ring Company at Rockford, Illinois, fill a long known want. They are not only well made rings but they are provided with a specially designed keeper at the joint that prevents any leak of gas. Their new booklet entitled, "A Few Facts About Piston Rings" tells the whole story. If you mention GAS REVIEW they will send you a copy free.

A new device called the telescribe has just been perfected in the Edison laboratories whereby the receiver of a telephone may be connected with a phonograph. The possibilities of the uses of the instrument are extensive. It can be used in commercial transactions and the records so obtained will be of value in case of subsequent legal proceedings. It can also be used for the transmission of late advertising copy by telephone where the exact words must be secured. No change is required in the ordinary telephone equipment and no electrical or mechanical connections need be changed. The person at the telephone wishing

to record a conversation simply places the receiver with the diaphram end downwards on a leather covered spring socket and another receiver which forms a part of the telescribe can be placed at the operator's ear so that he can follow the conversation.

REMARKABLE RECORD ON LOW SPEED.

To climb for eighteen miles with part of the hill a thirty per cent grade is some climb for any motorcycle. But when you add to this the fact that the cycle was carrying tandem a weight of about three hundred and fifty pounds, the record is even better.

It was made on the Fourth of July over a mountain road in California. The road runs from Healdsburg in Sonoma county to the Geyers and the trip was made by W. E. Hesse and his wife.

As is usual on the Fourth of July, the temperature was very high. The thermometer registered 100 degrees. At the start, the muffler and

the auxiliary air inlets were opened and the machine was run on the low gear the entire trip. In spite of the steep grade, the heavy load, and the hot day, the engine did not heat. No extra oil was supplied; the mechanical oiler kept the cylinders supplied with the proper amount. This is only one of the many feats of mountain climbing done by Mr. Hesse with his motorcycle.

The tandem attachment is arranged so that the seat can be removed and the rack used for carrying luggage. When the seat is on, there is room for luggage beneath it.

Grinding the Valves of a Gas Engine

OTTO L. LEWIS.

HE compression of a gas engine has a great effect upon its power. The highest pressure of the explosion is usually about three times the compression pressure. This is the reason why a small loss of compression means a considerable loss of power.

The loss may occur around the piston rings, at the valves, or at the spark plugs, priming cups and valve covers. The first serious leak is likely to occur at the exhaust valve. The cool incoming gas tends to protect the intake valve but the highly heated exhaust gases tend to warp the exhaust valve and corrode the valve seat. To detect a leak in a valve, remove the exhaust or intake pipe and have some one crank the motor over slowly making sure that the spark has been switched off. By listening at the valve port one can hear the gas blow past a leaky valve on the compression stroke.

A leaky valve rapidly becomes worse and should

therefore be reground as soon as possible after the leak has been discovered.

It is necessary to remove a valve in order to grind it. The valves are generally placed in the cylinder head on small farm engines. In this case the cylinder head must be taken off. The

spring must then be compressed and the valve spring washer removed. It is necessary to remove the cylinder head of the Ford automobile engine in order to grind the valves. The usual construction of the automobile engine, however, is that shown in figure 1, where the valve may be removed through the large hole directly over it. The plugs for these holes,-valve covers, as they

are usually called, are sometimes hard to unscrew. Tapping them on top with a hammer will usually loosen the thread. If this fails, run the motor until the covers become hot. Pour a little cold water in or on the cover and unscrew it at once before it has time to heat up again. This method is nearly always successful.

In order to compress the valve spring so that the valve spring washer may be removed, a “valve lifter" is necessary. This tool may be made of two rods, three-eighths of an inch in diameter, formed as shown in figure 2, and applied to the cylinder as shown in figure 1. The part A should be about eighteen inches long. The distance X between the forks of this piece must be wide enough to clear the split collar or pin under the valve spring washer.

To remove the valve, slip the fork under the valve spring washer and pry up, compressing the spring. Slip out the pin, key, or split washer that holds the spring washer in place. Let the spring down and remove the tool. Push a screw driver under the end of the valve stem and lift the valve from its seat. Slip a fine wire under the head of the valve, and pull it out of the cylinder.

There are many valve grinding compounds on the market. A very good grinding compound is made by mixing emery flour and machine oil. The mixture should be almost thin enough to run.

The arrangement of the valve for grinding is shown in figure 3. K is a spiral spring strong enough to raise the valve from its seat. This saves the trouble of lifting the valve by hand every few seconds. Most valves have a slot in the head so that a screw driver may be used to
