gine at a cost of $115. His engine, he says, is capable of making a ten-hour run at a cost, for fuel, of thirty-five cents, number one distillate being used for this purpose. To this cost must be added ten cents for cylinder oil. The engine is a four-cylinder, sixteen inch stroke, watercooled machine which makes twenty-eight strokes to the minute. An inexpensive connection with the pump jack forms an arrangement whereby irrigation is done direct, thus eliminating the necessity of having an auxiliary storage tank. Mr. Wright declares that this is a great improvement over the general system of using the auxiliary tank. The plant described furnishes water for plentiful irrigation of two acres of celery, and water for domestic purposes in the Wright home as well as in the homes of three neighbors nearby. From each one of these he collects at meter rates, one dollar a month being the minimum rate. This is possible for Mr. Wright because the city water distributing system does not extend to his home nor to those of the three neighbors. They are glad to obtain water from him. He laid lines of old pipe to the dividing line between his property and that of each of the neighbors served, and they laid pipe from there to their homes in order to have him serve them. One of them lives on each side of him and the other across the road. There is sufficient pressure to serve them all because the storage tank stand is twenty-two feet high. By supplying plenty of water to his two acre tract, Mr. Wright is able to grow enough garden truck to supply his family, and two good crops of celery each year, a thing which he could not do before he installed it because water for irrigation was not available to his use except by water meter distribution, a system which rendered it unpractical for his use on account of the enormous expense that would result if he gave his soil sufficient moisture.
