INTRODUCTORY NOTE BY THE EDITORS.

WHEN the preparation of this volume was first resolved upon, four Editors were appointed to collect and revise the Papers and Reports of the Discussions, and prepare them for publication. As, however, one of the number shortly after left for England, and the other three were widely apart while the earlier part of the Report was passing through the press, the editorial responsibilities of the volume have fallen. almost entirely to one of their number, Dr. Murdoch.

Delay in the issue of the Report would have caused it to lose much of its interest. Hence the proofs of papers, except in one or two instances, were not sent to the authors. With handwriting from fifty different pens, both printers and editor felt sometimes at a loss. Copy was followed as closely as possible; but mistakes may have been made. The writers of the papers must not be held responsible for errors which arose in this way.

No reporter was employed at Allahabad, as it is very difficult and expensive in India to obtain any one properly qualified. Speakers were therefore requested to write out their remarks. Some did so, thus securing fulness and accuracy. In the case of others, use has been made of brief notes taken at the Conference. Occasionally, there were many short remarks during a discussion. These have been omitted.
