SIR: There is submitted herewith a translation of the import and export schedules of Spain, one of a series of similar translations being made in the research division of this Bureau. This work was undertaken primarily to facilitate the compilation of foreign statistics, but it is published with the belief that it will be of great value to importers and exporters who desire to obtain statistics of Spanish trade. By the use of this translation the Spanish foreign-trade statistics available in public libraries can be readily interpreted by persons without a knowledge of Spanish. Translations of the schedules of other important countries are well under way and will be published as soon as practicable. MACELWEE, IMPORT AND EXPORT SCHEDULES OF SPAIN. INTRODUCTION. The translation of the import and export schedules of Spain presented in this pamphlet was made from the Estadística General del Comercio Exterior de España for 1916. In that publication the import statistics are given on pages 107 to 382, and the detailed export statistics on pages 467 to 647. While this translation is of the volume for 1916, it can be used in interpreting the statistics for earlier or later years. However, if it is used for other years the item numbers should not be slavishly followed, but the names of commodities should be compared in order to make certain that reference is made to the same items, as the addition of new items to the schedule may result in a change in all succeeding numbers. The unit of quantity is stated at the head of the columns giving quantities. These units and their English equivalents are listed on page 9. Translations of the names of countries are given below. Translations of the column headings are given on pages 9 and 10. In transcribing figures of both quantities and values it should be borne in mind that a period is used where the comma is generally placed in American practice. All of the values are official ones. The list of official valuations is revised annually by the Board of Customs and Valuation. The valuations are the same for all countries of origin and destination. |
