him. For sin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Tim. vi. 9, 10. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some have coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Acts xx. 33-35. I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel. Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give, than to receive.

SECTION II.

Psal. cxix. 36. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. Eccles. ii. 26. For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity, and vexation of spirit. Deut. xi. 13, 14, 15. And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments, which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul; That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain, and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full. Psal.

xxxvii. 3. Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily, thou shalt be fed. Jam. iv. 7. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Heb. xii. 9, 10. Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he, for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 1 Cor. ix. 27. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. Jam. i. 13, 14. Let no man say when he is tempted, he is tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. 1 Cor. x. 13. There hath no temptation taken you, but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Phil. iv. 5. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Rom. xiii. 14. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. 1 Tim. v. 8. But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. Prov. xx. 7. The just man walketh in his integrity; his children are blessed after him. Isai. xxvi. 7. The way of the just is uprightness; thou, most upright, doest weigh the path of the just. Matt. vi. 25—34. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, saying, What shall we eat, or What shall we drink, or Wherewithal shall we be clothed? Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, ́neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add

one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment ? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: and yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much rather clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore, take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink, or Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek.) But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow; for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Heb. xiii. 5. Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 1 Tim. i. 5. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned. 1 Cor. xiii. 4—8. 13. Charity suffereth long and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things; believeth all things; hopeth all things; endureth all things: Charity never faileth. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. Psal. exxii. 9. Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good. Rom. xii. 10-16. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another. Not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which curse you; bless, and curse not: Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind.

one toward another. Mind not high things, but condes.

cend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 1 Tim. vi. 6-8. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, neither may we carry any thing out. And having food and raiment, let us be therewith content. 1 Sam. ii. 7. The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and he lifteth up. Gen. xxxii. 10. I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands. Psal. cxliv. 3. Lord, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him. Dan. ix. 18. O my God, incline thine ear, and hear : open thine eyes, and behold our desolations: and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee, for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies. Jam. i. 17. Every good gift, and every perfect gift, is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

SECTION III.

Ephes. v. 3. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not once be named among you as bẹcometh saints. Col. iii. 5. Mortify, therefore, your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness which is idolatry. Mic. ii. 1. Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. Rom. i, 29-32. Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful,

proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection; who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Matt. xvi. 26. For what is a man profited if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Prov. xv. 27. He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own soul; but he that hath gifts shall live. Eccles. v. 10. He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. Matt. vi. 19-21. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Prov. xiii. 7. There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing; there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches. Matt. xiii. 22. He that received seed among thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. Jer. ix. 23. Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches. Psal. xlix. 6, 7. They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him. Mark x. 23-27. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto the disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God. And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in uncertain riches to enter into the kingdom of God. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 1 Tim.
