are at one is in wronging the Jew. Nicholas is as ready to vex Gregory as Gregory is to anathematize Nicholas; but their hostile hands may meet in friendly clasp over the manacled and bleeding body of Judah. Nor can it be otherwise; for, to the fullest extent of the expression, and to the uttermost ends of the earth, the Jews are God's witnesses even from of old, as the Protestant churches are the witnesses of the truth as it is in Jesus; and where "the law and the testimony are rejected, and a false standard set up in their place, how can their appointed witnesses find favour? The Russian persecutes from political motives, on the ground of self-interest, and in the exercise of a capricious despotism: the Roman from a legitimate hatred of whatsoever and whosoever brings the word of God forcibly before him; and under a consciousness too, that, delude himself as he may, Israel is again to rise; and that rise will be the signal of, or at least, contemporaneous with, Great Babylon's fall. Individually, perhaps, they do not believe this; but Satan, who leads them captive at his will, knows it full well; and he fills them with all hateful malignity against the Jew.

Seeing this; having before us on one hand the harsh decree of the Russian in its cruel enforcement, and on the other this little malicious Belgian fire-brand as a specimen of what finds credit in papal lands, ought we not to be more than passively watchful of what befals our brethren? Ought we not to be prepared to act, as far as circumstances may enable us, in their defence, and on their behalf? There is still a great lack among us of the open eye *See page 303.

that can take in at once the scattered people, and view them, and feel for them, and stand prepared to help them, as a nation. They are nationally oppressed, but not nationally aided. Of this a most flagrant instance lately occurred, where, having fled with others from the advancing power of France, in Africa, a number of Jews sought refuge with them at Gibraltar, but were, as Jews, refused a like indulgence with the Mahomedan Moors. Refused, not by a Spanish, but by an English official: not by some ignorant underling, but by the Governor himself! Such a fact warrants the strongest expressions that can be used to rouse us to the exigency of the case; and when one Englishman can so severely oppress, surely a body of Englishmen, brought to take a scriptural view of Israel's claims, might more effectually, more extensively, protect and serve the sufferers.

To return to our Romish Legend: it furnishes an impressive appeal to our compassionate sympathies on behalf of those many millions who bear the Christian name while they follow the profanest fables that ever were devised, degrading Him whose followers they profess to be, into forms the most insultingly contemptible. Throughout the whole work, Jesus Christ and the wafer are identified, not only by implication, but by most laboured elucidations, and shameless profanation of scripture. And on this fatal imposture they rest the salvation of their souls! We are worse than they, if the spectacle do not quicken us to tenfold zeal in promoting among them the knowledge of him whom to know is eternal life; to lead them to the spiritual meaning of what they take in its lowest carnal sense; attributing even

saving efficacy to their own wretched doings, and to a morsel of half-baked dough, while overlooking the most vital doctrines of the gospel; repentance towards God, and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. He that worships and falls down before the mouldy fragments of a wafer, repeating prayers of which he knows not the meaning, to them that by nature are no gods, is instructed that he thereby becomes a partaker of eternal life; but of the word itself how little is imparted to him! how little do his blind guides themselves know of the nature or object of saving faith! "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." From that wrath may the Lord deliver all who yet lie under its power!

We must not omit to exhibit the light in which Protestantism is set forth by the biographer of the "Saint Sacrament de Miracle." The picture of millennial happiness under Romish sway is very graphic, and with it we conclude our Legend.

Let Popery but fix her stake and kindle her pile, the merit is nearly equal in her eyes of casting a Jew or a Protestant into the flame.

THE ANGLO-CATHOLIC.

WOULD'ST thou in this our dark and stormy day,
From Catholics a brother's welcome claim?
Let hate of Calvin burn with steady flame;
Each ancient rubric with fond zeal obey;
Cry up church forms, put preaching far away;
Thyself schismatic, those schismatics name

Who doubt thy creed, and heap upon them shame;
While altars, fonts, and robes thy faith display.
Like Pharaoh make again the church's life,
A slavish toil in mortar and in brick;
Murder sweet charity with poison'd knife;
Curse all Dissenters; and with Jesuit trick
Entangle Protestants in hate and strife:
So Rome shall hail thee Anglo-Catholic.

THE RUSSIAN UKASE.

WITH mingled sorrow and indignation we transcribe from a Frankfort Journal the following announcement. Hopes were entertained that a more merciful, or rather a less unjust and cruelly oppressive line of policy would be adopted by the Czar towards his Jewish subjects; but it seems that the LORD is allowing His people again, as of old, to fall under the extreme of tyrannical severity, in order that his promised interposition on their behalf may be the more marked; and the glory of their ultimate deliverance be ascribed to Him alone. May He hasten the day!

"Notwithstanding the applications made in favour of the Israelite inhabitants of the frontiers of Russia and Poland, the transportation of that unhappy population has been irrevocably decided, as the only means of maintaining the system of exclusion, and the laws which protect it. One hundred thousand Israelites come under that measure. The rich Israelites, it is true, have been authorized to dispose of their property, and to fix their residence wherever they please. This was considered a favour, but it is a mere illusion. The Israelites being compelled to alienate their property, will not be able to sell it to advantage, and, on the other hand, they are only permitted to settle in the governments that formed part of the kingdom of Poland at the period
