from my fleep. Cor. xv. I Theff. iv. Jude 15. John v. 28. 2 Theff. i. 8. Rev. xx. 11, to 14. . Ifa. xxvi. 21. Micah vii. 16, 17. Pfal. v. 1, 2, 3. Mal. iii. 2, 3. Dan. vii. 9, 10. Mark iii. 13. Chap. xiv. 30. Mal. iv. 1. Luke iii. 17. Theff. vii. 16, 17. Rom. ii. 14, 15.

Chr. But what was it that made you so afraid of this fight?

Man. Why, I thought that the day of judgment was come, and that I was not ready for it : but this frighted me moft, that the angels ga. thered up feveral, and left me behind; alfo the pit of hell opened her mouth just where I ftood. My confcience too afflicted me: and as I thought, the Judge had always his eye upon me, fhewing indignation in his countenance.

Then faid the Interpreter to Chriftian, Haft thou confidered all thefe things?

Chr. Yes, and they put me in hope and fear. Inter. Well, keep all things fo in thy mind, that they may be as a goad in thy fides, to prick thee forward in the thou must way go. Then Chriftian began to gird up his loins, and to addrefs himself to his journey. Then faid the Interpreter, The Comforter be always with thee, good Chriftian, to guide thee in the way that leads to the city. So Chriftian went on his way, faying;

Here I have feen things rare and profitable,
Things pleafant, dreadful, things to make me ftable
In what I have begun to take in hand ;
Then let me think on them, and understand
herefore they fhewed me were, and let me be
Mul, O good laterbreter, to thee

Now I faw in my dream, that the highway up which Chriftian was to go, was fenced on each fide with a wall, and that wall was called Salvation. Up this way therefore did burdened Chriftian run, but not without great difficulty, because of the load on his back, Ifa. xxvi. 1.

He ran thus till he came at a place fomewhat afcending, and upon that place ftood a crofs, and a little below, in the bottom, a fepulchre. So I faw in my dream, that just as Chriftian came up with the cross, his burden loofened from off his fhoulders, and fell from off his back, and began to tumble, and fo continued to do, till it came to the mouth of the fepulchre, where it fell in, and I faw it no more.

When God re

leafes us of burden, we our guilt and are as thofe that leap for

joy.

Then was Chriftian glad and lightsome, and faid with a merry heart, He hath given me reft by his forrow, and life by his death. Then he ftood ftill a while to look and wonder; for it was very furprizing to him that the fight of the cross should thus eafe him of his burden. looked therefore, and looked a gain, even till the springs that were in his head fent the waters down his cheeks. Now, as he ftood looking and weeping, behold three fhining ones came to him, and faluted him with, Peace be to thee; fo the firft. faid to him, Thy fins be forgiven thee; the fecond flript him of his rags; and clothed him with change of raiment; the third alfo fet a mark on his forehead, and gave him a roll, with a feal upon it, which he bade him look on as he ran, and that he should

it in at the celeftial gate: fo they went their way. Then Chriftian gave three leaps for joy, and went on finging; Zech. xii. 10. Mark i. 2. Zech. iii. 4. Eph. i. 13.-A Chriftian can fing tho' alone, when God doth give him the joy of his heart.

Thus far did I come laden with my fin;
Nor could ought eafe the grief that I was in,
Till I came hither: What a place is this!
Muft here be the beginning of my blifs?
Muft here the burden fall from off my back?
Muft here the strings that bind it to me crack?
Bleft cross! bleft fepulchre! bleft rather be
The Man that there was put to fhame for me.

I faw then in my dream, that he went on thus, even until he came at the bottom, where he faw, a little out of the way, three men fast asleep, with fetters upon their heels. The name of the one was Simple, another Sloth, and the third Prefumption.

Christian then feeing them lie in this cafe, went to them, if peradventure he might awake them; and cried, You are like them that fleep on the top of a maft, for the dead fea is under you, a gulph that hath no bottom: Awake, therefore, and come away; be willing alfo, and I will help you off with your irons. He alfo told them, if he that goeth about like a roaring lion, come by, you will certainly become a prey to his teeth. With that they looked upon him, and began to reply in this fort: Simple faid, 1 fee no danger: Sloth faid, Yet a li more fleep; And Prefumption faid, Eve

Part I. they, we fee not wherein thou differeft from us but by the coat that is on thy back, which was as we trow, given thee by fome of thy neighbours to hide the shame of thy nakedness.

Chriftian has got his Lord's coat on his back, and is comforted therewith. He is comforted allo with his mark and his roll

Chr. By laws and ordinances you will not be faved, fince you came not in by the door. And as for this coat that is on my back, it was giwhither I go; and that, as you ven me by the Lord of the place fay, to cover my nakedness with: And I take it as a token of kindnefs to me; for I had nothing but rags before; and befides, thus I comfort myself as I go: Surely, think I, when I come to the gate of the city, the Lord thereof will know me for good, fince I have his coat on my back; a coat that he gave me freely in the day that he ftripped me of my rags. I have, moreover, a mark in my forehead, of which perhaps you have taken no notice, which one of my Lord's most intimate affociates fixed there in the day that my burden fell off my fhoulders. I will tell you moreover, that I had then given me a roll fealed, to comfort me by reading, as I go on the way: I was alfo bid to give it in at the celeftial gate, in token of my certain going in after it: all which things I doubt you want, and want them because you came not in at the gate, Gal. i. 16.

To these things they gave him no anfwer, only they looked upon each other, and laughed. I faw that they went on all, fave that
