CHAPTER I.

I DON'T think I ever saw a brother and sister more unlike in person, manner, and temperament than were Edmund and Rose Dillon. Their hair and eyes were equally dark, and that was all the likeness between them. And it was singular that both were so critically handsome, and yet so unlike.
