A S folidity of judgment, utility of matter, and perfpicuity of method, will be too obvious to every intelligent reader, on the first perufal of the following Treatife, not to convince him that it is one of the elaborate pieces of the late lord chief baron GILBERT, we presume there needs no further apology for making it publick, efpecially fince it is a fubject effentially necessary to be known by every individual who has kind of inheritance or poffeffion; for it is calculated in fuch a manner any as to be of use to the public in general, but more particularly to fheriffs, underfheriffs, flewards, landlords, tenants, &c. who ought to be thoroughly acquainted with this branch of the law. The tranflations at the bottom of the pages are intended that this book may be useful not only to gentlemen of the law, but to fuch alfo as are unacquainted with the original. An appendix of fome well chofen precedents is added for the ease of the practifer, and the whole rendered the best and compleatest book of its kind. ADVERTISEMENT TO THE PRESENT EDITION. OME time fince, the publisher of the prefent edition of this work, prevailed on a gentleman, well known at the bar, to revise it, and make fuch additions, as to him should feem neceffary. This, he flatters himfelf, has been done in a manner not undeferving of the attention of the profeffion. The work has received a very minute correction, as well in language, as in punctuation. The references have been all carefully examined; those that were inappofite have been retracted, those that were inaccurate have been rectified, and fuch as were neceffary have been supplied. The divifions have in fome measure been altered; at the fame time that others have been added. 4 |
