Dr. Brown, of Cheltenham, the idea was suggested to me, of presenting at the autumnal meeting of the Congregational Union held in that town this year, some memorial of illustrious men connected with the county of Gloucester. This was approved by the Committee, and arrangements were made for presenting to the Assembly such a memorial on Wednesday, October 14th. On reflection, I was led to select three names as illustrative of certain forms of service in the Church of Christ, without reference to any denominational peculiarities:-first, the service of authorship; secondly, the service of suffering; and, thirdly, the service of popular preaching.
