The "CAXTON" (essentially a Jobbing Machine) is simple, easily understood, and avoids all complication, requires less makingready than the Press, can work (with its recently Patented Improvements) any Job with a quarter-inch margin, and as fast as a Lad can feed, registers without points, is the strongest, lightest, and most compact Machine made, and can consequently work on any floor. The following Testimonials (a fair sample of the many) may be worthy of attention to parties who require Machines.

[blocks in formation]

DEAR SIR,-I cheerfully certify to the efficiency as a Job
Machine, of the small one of yours so far as I have as yet had an
opportunity of judging; we have had no trouble with it, and have
worked various kinds of jobs in a far superior manner to press
work. As regards the News Machine, however, which I had of
you in 1854, I think it perfect as a Newspaper Hand Machine, in-
asmuch as it not only produces its work in a superior manner,
(and any kind of work if required,) but is driven with such ease
by one man or I might say boy, as to astonish several practical
Master Printers who have seen it at work. Its simplicity of con-
struction is also much in its favour.
I am, my dear Sir, yours truly,

Mr. J. MYERS.

February 28, 1860.
SIR,-I have much pleasure in being able to inform
you that
the Printing Machine manufactured on your Caxton principle by
you, and shipped to me in the Cashmere, to the order of the
Honourable and Rev. Henry Ward, arrived perfectly safe and in
excellent preservation, was set up with ease, and turns out com-
plete and satisfactory work in every respect. We have given it a
fair trial of some three months, and I am happy to say that its
working is in every way efficient. It has effected a marked im-
provement in this office, and has been the saving of much trouble,
annoyance, and expense. I may add that all practical men who
have seen the Machine agree in expressing a very high opinion of
its merits, as well as of the adaptability of machines of its class to
the circumstances of a colony.
I remain, Sir, your obedient Servant,
To J. J. MYERS, Southampton.

SPORTSMEN and GENTLEMEN of the ARMY & NAVY.-S. and B. SOLOMONS, Opticians, 39, Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, opposite the York Hotel. Portability, combined with great power in FIELD, RACECOURSE, OPERA, and general out-door day and night powerful Waistcoat-pocket PERSPECTIVE GLASSES, weighing only four ounces each, containing 12 and 18 lenses, constructed of German glass, will show distinctly a person to know them at 3 and 8 miles. They serve every purpose on the Racecourse and at the Opera House. Country scenery and ships are clearly seen at 8 to 10 miles. They are also invaluable for Shooting, Deerstalking, and Yachting. Her Majesty's Coast Guards are making use of them as day and night glasses. The terms for them are powerful and brilliant telescopes for both eyes. The most powerful telescopes, possessing such extraordinary power that some, 33 inches, with an extra astronomical eyepiece, will show distinctly Jupiter's moons, Saturn's ring, and the double stars; with the same telescope a person can be seen and known three-and-a-half miles distant, and an object from fourteen to sixteen miles. They are in endless variety, of larger and all sizes, with increasing powers-large powerful astronomical telescopes upon REEVES' MOIST WATER COLOURS, in brass stands-and are secured by Her Majesty's Royal Letters

To insure a genuine Caxton Machine orders should be addressed to Mr. Myers, Printers' Engineer, Caxton Works, Southampton, England; and if ordered through a Type Founder, or Broker, it should be advised to Southampton also.

use. It contains Sandwich Box, Liquor Reservoir, Tobacco Box, Cigar Case, Fusee Box, and Pipe Holder. But its GREAT DISTINGUISHING FEATURE is in the HYDRAULIC Application (concealed by the shoulder-belt), and terminating with a mouthpiece, enabling the wearer to apply the same without "let or hindrance" when on march or travelling, and under circumstances when pouring out fluids might be inconvenient. Thus, when travellers are exposed and labouring under the effects of thirst, they could, by application to the "HYDRAULIC CANTEEN," allay all undue desire by moderate quantities of drink, and thus enable them to proceed with comfort until further supplies were at hand, though in most cases the Liquor Department of the Caneten will be found AMPLY SUFFICIENT FOR AN ORDINARY JOURNEY.

For India and Tropical Climates, the " HYDRAULIC CANTEEN" will be found a most invaluable adjunct, for which purpose it will be enamelled in colours that are least heat-conducting; while for home use they will be of various neutral shades, to correspond to any style of uniform. The Sandwich Box and other internal fittings of the Canteen can readily be brought into requisition; and the size of the whole being compact, yet commodious, it may altogether be pronounced as a most unique contrivance for the comfort of the Soldier, the Volunteer, the Tourist, the Sportsman, and the Traveller. They are harmless; but at the same time effective, and act as alteratives, deobstruents, and tonics. For the nursery, and period of later youth, these fine corrective medicines are inestimable.
