A CATALOGUE of the Library of the Royal Statistical Society, arranged under authors' names, was published in 1884, and this was supplemented by a subject index in 1886. Since that time large additions have been made to the Library, and within the last two years an examination of the whole of the books has been carefully made with the view of eliminating those which do not come strictly within the scope of the Society.
At the present time the number of books and separate publications in the Library is approximately 50,000. The time has, therefore, come when the publication of a new catalogue is essential. The present catalogue, which comprises (with certain exceptions named below) all works included in the Library on December 31st, 1906, has been prepared on a plan differing slightly from that previously adopted, and has been arranged with the view of affording means of easy reference with due regard to economy of space.
In consulting the volume the following general rules adopted in its compilation should be borne in mind :
I. Parliamentary and Official Papers of the United Kingdom are not separately entered, but general entries have been made under the subject-headings of the principal series, such as Births, Deaths and Marriages ; Census, &c. The official Catalogues of Parliamentary Papers are available for reference at the Society's Library, and are marked to indicate the publications which are in the Library. Municipal Publications of British and Irish towns are entered under the names of the towns, and, where numerous, grouped under-several subjectheadings.
II. Foreign and Colonial Official Returns are brought together under the name of the country or colony, and grouped as follows :(a) Publications relating to the whole country or colony
arranged under subject-headings in chronological
