shoulder, with fair depth of girth and barrel, though a little slack towards the back ribs. He had strong powerful quarters, large thighs and gaskins, good arms, and clean hocks-being very short from the knee and hock to the ground. He was altogether a low lengthy animal, carrying his head down and his full bushy tail well away from him, very much indeed in the style of his sire. Like St. Francis, too, he was very quiet tempered as well as very game when thoroughly roused; though this generally took all the hand and heel power of his jockey to accomplish-in stable phrase he wanted plenty of paying for his work. When opened, Mounseer was found to be one of the most muscular horses ever known.

PERFORMANCES.

In 1848, at Ascot Heath, Mounseer, then two years old, and ridden by Sly, was not placed for the first year of the Ascot Triennial Foal Stakes of 10 sov. each, &c., T.Y.C., won by Lord Eglinton's Elthiron, Lord Stradbroke's Borneo second. Sixteen others also started, but were not placed.

At Goodwood, ridden by Sly, and giving 3lb., he was beaten in a canter by Lord Clifden's Honeycomb for a sweepstakes of 25 sov. each, &c., T.Y.C.

In 1849, at Ascot Feath, Mounseer, ridden by Sly, ran third and last for the Welcome Stakes of 20 sov. each, &c., Swinley Course, won by Mr. Gully's Osterley, Lord Exeter's Edipus second.

At the same meeting, ridden by G. Mann, and carrying 5st. 71b., he was not placed for the Great Western Railway Handicap Plate of 300 sov., &c., Swinley Course, won by Sir F. Peacock's Repletion, 3 yrs., 5st. 3lb., Lord Clifden's St. Antonio, 4 yrs., 5st. 10lb. second, and Mr. Jaques's Chantrey, 3 yrs., 6st, 1lb. third. Eight others also started, but were not placed.

At Salisbury, ridden by Sly, and to be sold for 200 sov., he won the first and ran second to Mr. Sadler's Antelope (50 sov.) for the two next heats for the City Bowl, &c.; heats one mile. Three others also started.

At the same meeting, ridden by Blandford, he ran second to Mr. Herbert's Radulphus for the County Members' Plate. Two others also started.

At Epsom Autumn Meeting, ridden by S. Mann, and carrying 5st. 3lb., he ran third for the Autumn Handicap of 20 sov. each, &c., New Derby Course, won by Mr. Charlton's Kissaway, 3 yrs., 6st., Mr. Wrather's Maid of Masham, 4 yrs., 7st. 10lb., second. Eight others also started, but were not placed. 6 to 1 agst. Mounseer, who was beaten a head for second, and the second a head by the winner.

At Newmarket Second October Meeting, ridden by Sly, he was not placed for a sweepstakes of 10 sov. each for two and three-year-olds, &c., first half of the Abingdon Mile, won by Lord Strathmore's Philosopher, Mr. Drinkald's Remnant second. Seven others also started, but were not placed.

At the Houghton Meeting, ridden by Rodney, and carrying 6st. 1lb., he won a Handicap Plate of 50 sov. A.F., beating Mr. Douglas's Sir Gilbert, 3 yrs., 5st. 12lb. (2), Duke of Richmond's Helter Skelter,

4 yrs., 7st. 10lb. (3), and the following not placed :-Mr. B. Green's Flatcatcher, 4 yrs., 8st. 7lb., Mr. Crawford's Iron Rail, 5 8st. yrs., 7lb., Lord Clifden's Loadstone, 4 yrs., 8st. 4lb., Mr. Steward's Creole, aged, 7st. 71b., Mr. Payne's Glenlyon, 3 yrs., 6st. 11lb., Mr. Day's Colocynthis, 4 yrs., 6st. 10lb., Mr. Peck's The Swift, 3 yrs., 5st. 71b., Mr. J. Osborne's Carthaginian, 3 yrs., 5st. 7lb., and Mr. Daley's Cayenne, 3 yrs., 5st. 9lb. Even on Mounseer, who won by a length.

In 1850, at Northampton, ridden by Rodney, and carrying 6st. 13lb., he was not placed for the Great Northamptonshire Stakes of 25 sov. each, &c., two miles, won by Mr. Dawson's Priestess, 4 yrs., 6st. 10lb., Mr. Jaques's Chantrey, 4 yrs., 6st. 131b. (2), Mr. Hill's Osterley, 4 yrs., 7st. (3). Fifteen others also started, but were not placed. 6 to 1 against Mounseer.

At Epsom Spring Meeting, ridden by Charlton, and carrying 6st. 10lb., he ran second to Colonel Anson's Backbiter, 5 yrs., 7st. 3lb., for the Great Metropolitan Stakes of 25 sov. each, &c., two miles and a quarter, Mr. Gratwicke's Cheerful, 4 yrs., 6st., third. Twelve others also started, but were not placed. 12 to 1 against Mounseer, who was beaten by a neck.

At Chester, ridden by Dockeray, and carrying 6st. 91b., he won the Tradesmen's Plate or Cup of 200 sov., &c., two miles and a quarter, beating Mr. Day's Cockermouth, 5 yrs., 6st. 10lb. At Ascot Heath, ridden by F. Butler, he ran third for the third year of the first Ascot Triennial Foal Stakes of 10 sovs. each, &c., once round, won by Sir J. Hawley's Vatican, Lord Eglinton's Elthiron second. Three others also ran. 2 to 1 against Mounseer, who was beaten a length and a half from the winner.

At Salisbury, ridden by Sly, and carrying 8st. 3lb., he won the Gold Cup, two miles, beating Duke of Richmond's Vampire, 6 yrs., 8st. 5lb., and Mr. Elwes's Stockbridge Buck, 3 yrs., 7st. Won by a neck.

At the same meeting he walked over for Her Majesty's Plate of 100 guineas. This was on Friday July the 15th; and on the following Thursday he dropped down dead, in his gallop at Pimpern, having broken a blood vessel.
