I. Translate into English :

(α) Απεκρίθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται· Ουδέποτε οὕτως ἐλάλησεν ἄνθρωπος, ὡς οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος. ̓Απεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι· Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε; Μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν, ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων; Αλλ ̓ ὁ ὄχλος οὗτος, ὁ μὴ γιγνώσκων τὸν νόμον, ἑπικατάρατοί εἰσι. Λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτοὺς, ὁ ἐλθὼν νυκτὸς πρὸς αὐτὸν, εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν· Μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ παρ' αὐτοῦ πρότερον, καὶ γνῷ τι ποιεῖ; ̓Απεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ· Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶ; ἐρεύνησον, καὶ ἴδε, ὅτι προφήτης ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας οὐκ ἐγήγερται.

(6) Οἱ οὖν στρατιῶται, ὅτε ἐσταύρωσαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν, ἔλαβον τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ (καὶ ἐποίησαν τέσσαρα μέρη, ἑκάστῳ στρατιώτῃ μέρος) καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα· ἦν δὲ ὁ χιτὼν ἄῤῥαφος, ἐκ τῶν ἄνωθεν ὑφαντὸς δι ̓ ὅλου. Εἶπον οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Μὴ σχίσωμεν αὐτὸν, ἀλλὰ λάχωμεν περὶ αὐτοῦ, τίνος ἔσται· ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ, ἡ λέγουσα· Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον. Οἱ μὲν οὖν στρατιῶται ταῦτα ἐποίησαν.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Decline ὑπηρέται, ἀρχόντων, νυκτός, τέσσαρα, μέρη, κλῆρον.

2. Write out fully the persons (singular and plural) of ἀπεκρίθησαν, ἐλάλησεν, ἀκούσῃ, ἐρεύνησον, εἶπον, ἔσται, διεμερίσαντο.

3. State fully the moods, tenses, persons, numbers, of the following verbs, stating also the verbs from which they come:-πεπλάνησθε, ἐλθών, γνῷ, ἐγήγερται, λάχωμεν, πληρωθῇ, ἔβαλον.

4. Give the future, perfect active, and perfect passive, of ἴδε, σχίσωμεν, λέγουσα, ἐποίησαν, κρίνει.

5. Give the conjugations of ἐλάλησεν, κρίνει, σχίσωμεν, λέγει. State the characteristics of those conjugations, and the endings of their perfects active.

6. State the rules in accordance with which verbs are reduplicated, or only augmented, in the perfect; and apply them to forming the perfect active of θύω, σκάπτω, ἀκούω, γράφω, ψάλλω.

CHEMISTRY.

1. How is Nitric Acid made, and what are its properties ? Describe the tests for Nitrates.

2. State your reasons for believing the atmosphere to be a mixture of gases, and not a chemical combination.

3. Describe the preparation and properties of Sulphuretted Hydrogen gas. What common metals does it precipitate from

their acidified solutions?

4. How would you prepare the brownish-yellow solution of Perchloride of Iron from the ordinary crystals of green vitriol? What tests enable you to distinguish between a yellow or persalt, and a green or protosalt, of iron, in solution ?

5. Describe the process of freezing water. Explain what is meant by the expressions "point of maximum density," and “latent heat,” of water.”

6. How is borax, or microcosmic salt, used in blow-pipe testing; and what are the characteristic effects producible therewith?
