PRELIMINARY GENERAL EXAMINATION.- -Midsummer, 1865.

I. Translate into English:

Ita ancipiti proelio diu atque acriter pugnatum est. Diutius quum nostrorum impetus sustinere non possent, alteri se, ut coeperunt, in montem receperunt; alteri ad impedimenta et carros suos se contulerunt. Nam hoc toto proelio, quum ab hora septima ad vesperum pugnatum sit, aversum hostem videre nemo potuit. Ad multam noctem etiam ad impedimenta pugnatum est, propterea quod pro vallo carros objecerant, et e loco superiore in nostros venientes tela conjiciebant, et nonnulli inter carros rotasque mataras ac tragulas subjiciebant nostrosque vulnerabant. Diu quum esset pugnatum, impedimentis castrisque nostri potiti sunt. Ibi Orgetorigis filia atque unus e filiis captus est. Ex eo proelio circiter millia hominum cxxx superfuerunt, eaque tota nocte continenter ierunt; nullam partem noctis itinere intermisso, in fines Lingonum die quarto pervenerunt, quum et propter vulnera militum et propter sepulturam occisorum nostri, triduum morati, eos sequi non potuissent. Caesar ad Lingonas literas nunciosque misit, ne eos frumento neve alia re juvarent: qui si juvissent, se eodem loco quo Helvetios habiturum.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Decline ancipiti, proelio, impetus, montem, alteri, millia, tota, literas.

2. Parse fully, giving the perfect tense and supine of each verb, sustinere, vesperum, pugnatum est, partem, juvissent, habiturum, die, loco.

3. How are neuter verbs conjugated in the passive? Give an example from this extract.

4. Unus e filiis: what case do partitive adjectives govern ? Write down the rule, and explain e filiis.

5. Give the etymology of impedimenta, contulerunt, triduum, superfuerunt.

6. Compare continenter.

GEOMETRY.

1. Give Euclid's definitions of the different kinds of three sided figures.

2. On the same base, and on the same side of it, there cannot be two triangles which have their sides terminated in one extremity of the base equal to one another, and also those terminated in the other extremity-(first case only).

3. If one side of a triangle be produced, the exterior angle is greater than either of the interior opposite angles.

4. Any two sides of a triangle are greater than the third. Show that the difference of any two sides is less than the third.

5. Triangles upon the same base and between the same parallels are equal to one another.

6. If the square described upon one of the sides of a triangle be equal to the squares described upon the other two sides of it, the angle contained by these two sides is a right angle.

7. If a straight line be divided into any two parts, the rectangle contained by the whole and one of the parts is equal to the rectangle contained by the two parts, together with the square of the aforesaid part.

8. Divide a given straight line into two parts, so that the rectangle contained by the whole and one of the parts shall be equal to the square of the other part.

9. Show that the diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other at right angles.

10. Construct an isosceles triangle equal to a given triangle upon a given base.
