GEOGRAPHY.

1. Name the six largest rivers of the British Islands, with the seas, &c. into which they respectively flow. Describe fully any one of these rivers, noting its direction, the towns on its banks, and the counties through which it flows.

2. What counties are washed by the English Channel? Name the chief town of each county, the river, bay, &c. on which it stands, and the trade for which it may be noted.

3. Enumerate the principal articles of export from Scotland; and give the names and positions of the seaports on the eastern coast of that country.

4. Name the mountains of Ireland, the counties through which they pass, and the highest summit in each group.

5. In what counties, and in what part of them, are the following towns situated?-Birmingham, Cork, Glasgow, Newcastle, Belfast, Hull, Limerick, Paisley, Merthyr Tydfil. For what are they severally known?

6. Through what countries, and past what great towns, do the rivers Danube, Rhine, Rhone, Vistula, Seine, and Tagus flow? Describe any one of these rivers.

7. From what countries do we import the following articles ?— arrowroot, camphor, cantharides, ginger, opium, sago, aloes, cloves, drugs, wine, fruits.

8. What European countries border upon the Baltic and North Seas? Name the capital and also the sea-ports of each.

9. Draw an outline of the east coast of England or of Ireland, showing as far as you are able, the positions of the principal rivers, sea-ports, and islands.

1. Write down in words 71002101, and in Roman numerals 1862. Add together five hundred and four thousand and twelve, seven millions eight hundred and five, and ten thousand and one.

2. Multiply 4579 by 8060, and divide 792415 by 72 as 9 times 8. Also divide 345828483 by 9867.

3. Reduce £869 11s. 34d. to half-pence, and a hundred million seconds to years.

4. Find the price of 437 qrs. of wheat, at £2 11s. 10 d. per qr.; and divide 35 acres 2 roods 20 poles into 38 equal allotments.

5. Explain the terms Fraction, Vulgar Fraction, Numerator, and Multiple. Find the L.C.M. of 16, 42, 63, 14, 72, and reduce 330 to its lowest terms.

9. A quart of the mineral water of Vichy, called Hauterive, contains about 4 grammes of bicarbonate of soda, a gramme being nearly equal to 15 grains. What quantity of soda will a person take in a week, who drinks a pint of this water daily ?

10. New Westminster Bridge is 990 feet in length and 85 feet in breadth, and cost £4 per sq. ft.; the old bridge was 1160 feet in length and 43 feet in breadth, and cost £7 16s. per sq. ft. Find the difference in the cost of these structures.

8. Who was the Pretender, and what was the result of the attempt made by him in 1745 ?
