The first, second, and third subjects of this examination are substantially the same as those of the clerk examination, departmental service, p. 190 et seq., except that the first subject consists of an exercise in writing abbreviations. For this exercise the examiner pronounces the words and the competitor is required to write the authorized abbreviations.

The fifth subject of this examination-geography of America and Europe-is substantially the same as the fifth subject of the day inspector examination, p. 240.

OTHER SPECIAL CUSTOMS EXAMINATIONS.

Other special customs examinations are held as the exigencies of the service require, such as those for examiners of merchandise, examiners of woolen goods, examiners of drugs, and examiners of other special classes of goods; also law clerks, assistant gaugers, marble-measurers, etc. Examinations of the character here described are not always held at the regular semiannual examinations, on the first Tuesdays of April and October, but may be held on said days or at such times as the needs of the service require. Persons who have applications on file for these positions will be informed when special examinations are held.
