Lumley's force, there is the advent of Marie Taglioni, who comes amongst us with every likelihood of ascending another step in public favour.

At The Royal ITALIAN OFERA, the admirers of Viardot are in ecstacies at her return, and on rehearing the “ Prophète ;" but to those who do not visit the opera for the purpose of remaining a whole night and morning, there is more delight and a greater charm to be extracted from “Don Giovanni ” and “ Roberto,” both of which works have been giveu most efficiently lately here by singers and instrumentalists.

Mr. Mitchell has the satisfaction of knowing that his efforts in securing the talent of Madame Rachel have not been altogether unappreciated. The appearance of The St. James's THEATRE clearly demonstrates the high favour with which the performances of this gifted woman are held by the frequenters of this resort of the beau monde. The "sentimental comedy” of “Mademoiselle Belle Isle,” by Dumas, as it is termed, does not afford full scope for the abilities of a great actress like Rachel, whose powers are more worthily employed in " Les Horaces."

Madame Vestris is nightly performing in “King Charming," which has been reproduced with all the splendour of scenery and magnificence of dresses so conspicuous in its early performance at the LYCEUM.

The fine weather is a powerful inducement for a visit to the HIPPODROME, where novelty appears to be the order of the day ; aud what with balloon ascents, tournaments, steeple-chases, ostrich matches, and other agrecable diversions, the visitors must indeed be hard to please who cannot be satisfied with this variety of entertainment.

A similar kind of performance is being given at CREMONNE GARDENS, an engagement having been entered into with M. Franconi, whose stud is daily and nightly to be seen in an arena especially erected ; and judging from the satisfaction displayed by the numerous spectators, it is fair to conclude that equestrianism will be in high repute in this Simpsonian retreat. The lessee of these well-arranged gardens spares no expense in providing amusement; and his illuminated device repre. Genting "Welcome to all Nations of the Earth," cannot but be accepted by visitors from distant lands as an earnest on the part of Mr. Simpson to study the taste of one and all.

At the SURREY ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS M. Jullien is the “ head and front" of a band of well-disciplined musicians, and it is only fair to declare the immense satisfaction given by the instrumental performance. Neither should omission be made of the fireworks, which for originality of design and excellence of execution far outshine all previous displays.

And now having well taken the round of London amusements, the difficulty to be encountered is how to get round the “Globe." What it is, and what it is meant to illustrate, perhaps Mr. Wyld will be good enough to explain. The visitor-if, indeed, one can be found daring enough to encounter the difficulties that await him on his sorrowful pilgrimage---after having succeeded in extricating himself from the tollhouse at the entrance, finds or loses himself in a dreary waste, where he is met by a “guide," who proves to be anything but a “philosopher and friend," who prevails upon him to mount a staircase, which being at last accomplished, a piece of canvas, or an ancient sheet is just visible,

with sundry pieces of cork, or matches of wood stuck on it, having a few letters above, informing the exhausted traveller that such a dab is " Australia” or “ New Zealand," or some other spot ; but how, or in what manner such a conclusion is to be arrived at, is so wrapped in obscurity that the honourable member for Bodmin, if he have any regard for his customers, will unravel the mystery. As it is, bitter experience is only suggestive of the dreadfully huge quantity of abominable gas inhaled in this earthy, mouldy, dark, and dreary dungeon of Leicestersquare.

STATE OF THE ODDS, &c.

SALE OF BLOOD STOCK.-Lord Eglinton has sold Cnæus to Lord Lurgan ; Mr. Mangan Louis Philippe to Lord Eglinton ; Sir Joseph Hawley has bought Clincher; and Mr. Thomas Lister, of Beverley, has purchased of Mr. R. Richardson, from the Meaux Stud, near Beverley, the following yearlings : Bay colt by Venison, out of the Arab's dam; bay filly by lago out of Aveline, by Gladiator out of sister to Hornsea ; brown filly by Lanercost out of Beverlac's dam ; and a brown filly, sister to Lizzy, by Lanercost out of sister to IIorpsea. The late Lord Alford's stud of hunters was sold at Hyde-park Corner, on Monday, the 16th, at prices ranging from two hundred to a “pony." The sale of blood stock during the month by Messrs. Tattersalls has not been important.

OBITUARY.—The stallion The Emperor, winner of the last Ascot Cup and first Emperor's Plate, at the Haras, Paris. The Earl of Glasgow's two-year old colt by Slane, out of Alarm's dam, very heavily engaged. The Cur, Trouncer, and Vasa have been destroyed.

Balchin, the trainer, well known for many years at the minor metropolitan meetings, died at Sutton, on Monday, the 16th of last month.

Lord Zetland's horses are now trained by his lordship's hunting groom, Atkinson; the Lightfoot failure having led to the discharge of Robert Hill, who starts as a public trainer. Voltigeur has been scratched for many of his engagements.

The members of the Job and Postmasters' Provident Fund held their annual dinner at the London Tavern on Friday, the 13th ult., the Hon. P.S. Pierrepoint in the chair. The attendance was very great, and the subscription list, we believe, better filled than at any previous gathering, the society progressing altogether in the most satisfactory manner. Not the least agreeable feature of a very pleasant evening was the really superior singing of “ Major ” Smith, who, even when facing “ the professionals," made very strong running, and finished first favourite for next season.

Of the four events on which we have managed to run up a table of the month's business, the Derby of next year is even now perhaps the most interesting. There is every promise, too, of an exciting race for the July ; at any rate, Brother to Elthiron's performance in it must have considerable effect on the prices of himself and others engaged in it. At the time we write he is scarcely first favourite ; while creeping up we have a couple of Kent's horses, Home-brewed and Houlakin, as well as
