1. GIVE the substance of Paley's remarks on Hume's statement, that the case of miracles is a contest of opposite improbabilities.

2. Give verbatim Paley's second proposition.

3. Quote passages from the New Testament, containing exhortations to patience under distress.

4. Recite the testimonies of St Ignatius and St Polycarp relative to the sufferings of the Apostles. When did they live?

5. Shew from Pliny that a morality more strict than was ordinary, prevailed in his time in Christian societies. Why does Paley think that his testimony may be carried back to the Apostolic age itself?

6. What remarks does Paley make on the style and language of the New Testament?

7. Paley says that we may lay out of the question all accounts in which allowing the fact to be true it still remains doubtful whether a miracle were wrought. Give instances of such accounts.

8. How does Paley contrast our Saviour's manner of devotion with that of the Methodists?

1. GIVE instances of the candour with which the Book of Acts is written, and of the absence of any propensity in its author to magnify the fortitude, or exaggerate the sufferings of his party.

2. Shew by quotations from the Book of Acts and the Apostolical Epistles, that the primitive Christians submitted to new rules of conduct and a peculiar course of private life.

3. What are the considerations which make it in the highest degree probable that the story for which the first preachers of Christianity underwent sufferings was a miraculous story?

4. What particular expressions in St Luke's preface to his Gospel are brought forward by Paley in support of the position, that the Gospels were not the original cause of the Christian history being believed, but were themselves among the consequences of that belief?

5. Shew that from the situation of their reputed authors, if any one of the four Gospels be genuine, we have sufficient proof that the story which we now have is, in the main, the story which the Apostles published.

6. What peculiarity in the style and language of the New Testament proves that it must have been written in the age of the Apostles?

7. What does Paley mean by an otiose assent to relations of a miraculous nature? Shew that an assent to the reality of the alleged miracles of Christ and of his Apostles could not have been of this kind.

8. Demonstrate the absurdity of the modern Jewish exposition; that the people of Israel are represented in the person whose character and fortunes are described in the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah.
