WHAT were the errors of Cerinthus? In what manner is it thought that the words in the Nicene Creed, καὶ εἰς ἕνα Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν, were intended to guard against them? It is said, that St John wrote against his opinions, or those of his forerunners, the Nicolaitans. Can you mention language of St John, of which this is meant?

2. What expressions in early writers have led to the belief, that St Paul visited Britain? What persons, mentioned in one of the Epistles to Timothy, have been with some probability connected with the early British Church?

3. Give some account of Papias. What peculiar opinion did he hold? in this?

4. What was the controversy between Polycarp and Anicetus? How concluded? What was the name afterwards given to those who agreed with Polycarp?

5. Give a short account of Justin Martyr, and mention his genuine works.

1. WHAT is the general value of Eusebius as a Church Historian ? What opinion do you form of his orthodoxy? What was his conduct concerning the ouоovolov at the Council of Nice? What inaccuracy is there in his quotation from Josephus in his account of the death of Herod Agrippa? Do you consider that it throws a doubt on his fidelity as a historian? 2. In what sense are the following words used by Eusebius?

ἐντυγχάνειν, διαστολαὶ, ἐπιστάσεις, δημοσιεύειν, σκηνώματα, μεγάλα στοιχεῖα, οἰκονομία, παροικία, φιλοσοφία, γνῶσις (quoting Clement of Alexandria), pwτíšeɩv.

3. What different statements do we find in Eusebius concerning the relationship of St James to our Lord? Investigate from Scripture the probable relationship of our Lord's brethren to Him. Refer also to the different patristic opinions, especially mentioning Papias, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, the Apostolical Constitutions, and Eusebius himself.

4. Investigate the evidence to be derived from Eusebius touching the Canonical authority of the Epistle to the Hebrews and the Epistle of St James. Also concerning the date of the Apocalypse. Is there any, and what ambiguity in the following passages, and do any other statements of Eusebius clear them up?

(α) ἰστέον δὲ ὡς νοθεύεται (sc. ἡ ἐπιστολὴ τοῦ ̓Ιακώβου).

5. Eusebius (Lib. III.) gives an account of Ignatius and his Epistles; What have been the arguments for and against the genuineness of the seven shorter Epistles, founded on this account? Do the newly discovered Syriac Epistles differ from the description of Eusebius? And, if so, in what respects ?

6. Translate, Lib. II. cap. 3 :

1. WHAT efforts had been made to reform the English Church before the reign of Henry VIII? What were the principal agencies at work in producing the Reformation of the sixteenth century?

2. Enumerate the respective points in which Henry VIII. supported or opposed the Reformed doctrines. What facilities for reading the Bible, and what religious books were put forth by authority during his reign?

3. Give a brief account of the various translations of the Bible which were made in England previously to our present authorised version.

4. What was the origin of Chantries? When were they suppressed? to what purpose were the proceeds applied?

5. What was the state of religious parties at the accession of Edward VI? Enumerate the most important religious measures which were passed during the first parliament of his reign?

6. What important Ecclesiastical measures were passed by the first parliament under Queen Mary? What tests of heresy were put to Cranmer, Ridley, and Latimer, at their trials?

7. Give the date of the Act of Uniformity. What was the High Commission Court? When was it established? To what extent did the Bishops and Parochial Clergy conform to the Act of Supremacy?

8. What effect was produced in England by the Bull of Excommunication against Queen Elizabeth? Shew that Archbishop Parker was duly consecrated.

9. Upon what principle was the English Reformation conducted? How did this principle differ from that of the Reformed Churches? When and on what occasion did the non-conformists first separate from the Church of England?

THE ARTICLES OF RELIGION.

1. GIVE a brief account of

The Marburg Articles,

The Torgau Articles.

Through what successive steps may they have had any influence on the XXXIX Articles?

Enumerate the various books of Articles which were drawn up in England previously to those now in use.

2. How far do the writings of the Apostolic Fathers assert or imply the doctrine of the Trinity? What doctrines respecting the Trinity were held by Praxeas, Noetus, Sabellius, and Paul of Samosata? Distinguish between homoousios, and homoiousios. When was the doctrine of the homoousion established?

3. Prove that the names of Father, Son, and Spirit are not merely names of different operations of the Deity; but that the three persons of the Trinity are plainly distinguished from one another as personal agents.

4. Upon what grounds has it been maintained that in the first chapter of St John's Gospel Aóyos signifies the Thought or Reason of God? Shew the unsoundness of the argument.

5. How does it appear that the two natures united in the One Person of Christ will never be divided? Shew that our Saviour was a sacrifice not only for original guilt, but also for the actual sins of men.

6. What is the meaning of the word "ons? When was the Article "He descended into hell" received into the Creed? When and on what occasion were the words "And in the Holy Ghost the Lord and Giver of

life, Who proceedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets," added to the Nicene Creed? What heresy was there condemned?

7. State briefly our grounds for believing that the present Hebrew Canon of the Old Testament is that to which our Lord gave his sanction.

8. What is the probable origin of Creeds? State the various meanings which have been ascribed to the word Zuußolov. Point out the object of the following clauses in the Athanasian Creed:

Who although he be God and man, yet he is not two, but one Christ. One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking of the Manhood into God.

One altogether; not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person. 9. What do our Articles maintain respecting free will? What were the doctrines of the Semi-Pelagians on this point? Investigate the Scriptural meaning of the term Justification. Shew that good works do spring out necessarily of a true and lively faith.

10. Shew that prayer for the dead did not presuppose purgatory. Answer the arguments which the Romanists attempt to adduce from 1 Cor. iii. 12-15: "Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss': but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire."

11. Shew that the doctrine of Episcopal ordination is not invalidated by 1 Tim. iv. 14: "Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery." 12.
