OF ARTS.

An examination for the Degree of M. A. shall be held in Madras once a year, commencing on the second Monday in February.

77.

Candidates for the Degree of M. A. must have taken the Degree of B. A. in this or some other University in the British Empire.

78. Applications for admission to this examination must reach the Registrar not later than the 30th June preceding. Each Candidate must forward with his application his B. A. Diploma, or afford other satisfactory evidence of having obtained such a Degree, and notify the Branch in which he elects to be examined. Candidates in the first branch must also specify the optional language which they propose to bring up.

79. No Candidate shall be registered unless he have previously paid a fee of Fifty Rupees. Candidates failing to pass one examination may be admitted to subsequent examinations on payment of a like fee on each occasion.

80. The examination for the Degree of M. A. shall be conducted by means of printed papers.

81. Candidates for the Degree of M. A. shall be examined in one or other of the following branches of knowledge :

FIRST BRANCH.
Language.

(1.) English-in which each Candidate must undergo examination.

(2.) One of the following languages at the option of the

SECOND BRANCH.

Mathematics, Pure and Applied.

(1.) The more advanced parts of Algebra including the theory of Equations.

(2.) Plane and Spherical Trigonometry.

(3.) Co-ordinate Geometry of two and three dimensions. (4.) Differential and Integral Calculus, with Differential

Equations.

(5.) Statics, Hydrostatics, and Dynamics. (6.) Newton's Principia, Sections 1, 2, 3. (7.) Geometrical Optics.

(8.) Plane Astronomy.

THIRD BRANCH.

Physical Science.

(1.) Experimental Physics, including Light, Heat, Sound, Electricity and Magnetism.

(2.) Chemistry, Inorganic and Organic, including a knowledge of Quantitative Analysis.

(3.) Geology, Mineralogy and Paleontology.

FOURTH BRANCH.

Biology.

(1.) Botany and Vegetable Physiology.

(2.) Zoology and Palæontology.

(3.) Physiology, Animal and Comparative.

FIFTH BRANCH.

Mental Philosophy and Sociology.

(1.) Psychology.

(2.) Logic,

(3.) Morals.

(4.) Political Economy.

(5.) History.

82. The examination in English shall embrace the History of the Language and the History of the Literature during the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, and selections from any ten of the following authors :

Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Massinger, Milton, Dryden, Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Tennyson, Addison, Johnson, DeQuincey, Coleridge, Hallam, and Carlyle. The examination in the optional languages shall be in the following works :—

SANSKRIT.

Twelve Hymns from the 1st Mandala of the Rig-Veda, with Sáyana's Commentary.

Manu, (Book 2, 7, and 8).

Dásakumáracharita (or the Púrvabhága of the Kádambari.) Mrichchhakati.

Kálidása, (one Play; either the Sákuntala or Vikramorvási.) Bhavabhúti, (one Play; either the Vira-Charita or Uttararámacharita.)

Mégha-dûta, by Kálidása.

Védánta-sára of Sadananda, or the Tarkasangraha, together with the Tarkadípiká.

The examination shall include a passage from Milton or Shakespeare, to be translated into the Sanskrit Anushtup metre, as well as Sanskrit prose composition. The Candidate shall also be required to possess a competent knowledge of the native system of grammar.

GREEK.

Eschylus.-Two Plays.

Homer's Iliad.-Three Books.

Thucydides.-Three Books.

Aristophanes.-Two Plays.

Demosthenes.-Two Orations,

Plato. Two Dialogues.

Aristotle.-Three Books of the Ethics.

In the Déva Nágari character only.

Pliny.-Letters or Portions of Natural History.

ARABIC AND PERSIAN.

A list of the books in Arabic and Persian will be published hereafter.

The examination shall include translation from English into the optional language and vice versâ, together with original prose composition in each language: there shall also be questions in comparative grammar and philology.

A general acquaintance with the subject-matter of the works in the respective languages shall be required, as also such a knowledge of general history as may be necessary for their due appreciation.

83. In the Second Branch, the book-work questions on Statics, Hydrostatics, and Dynamics, shall bear chiefly upon such parts of those subjects as require for their complete investigation the use of the Differential and Integral Calculus.

Nicol Elements of Mineralogy.
Owen-Paleontology.

Nicholson-Manual of Paleontology.

The Candidates will be required to compose an essay on a subject connected with the foregoing sciences; and the Examiners will test the practical knowledge of the Candidates.
