In diesem Augenblicke hörte er aus den Fenstern des anstossenden Gebäudes das Heulen und Wehklagen der Gräfinnen Terzky und Kinsky, die so eben von dem gewaltsamen Tode ihrer Männer benachrichtigt worden. Ehe er Zeit hatte, diesem schrecklichen Vorfalle nachzudenken, stand Deveroux mit seinen Mordgehülfen im Zimmer. Er war noch in blossem Hemde, wie er aus dem Bett gesprungen war, zunächst an dem Fenster an einen Tisch gelehnt. Bist du der Schelm,' schreit Deveroux ihn an, der des Kaisers Volk zu dem Feind überführen und seiner Majestät die Krone vom Haupte herunter reissen will? Jetzt must du sterben.' Er hält einige Augenblicke inne, als ob er eine Antwort erwartete; aber Ueberraschung und Trotz verschliessen Wallenstein's Mund. Die Arme weit auseinander breitend, empfängt er vorn in der Brust den tödtlichen Stoss der Partisane, und fällt dahin in seinem Blut, ohne einen Laut auszustossen.

(2) Eine fremde Sprache ist schon als wissenschaftliche Beleuchtung der eignen nöthig, aber auch genug. Leider drängt sich die französische auf und voran, weil eine Frau sie schon lernen muss, um nur französische Einquartierung zu fassen und zu füllen. Die Schreib- und Sprech-Welt hat einen solchen fremden Kunst- Sprachschatz aus allen Wissenschaften in Umlauf gesetzt, dass man die Mädchen, welche die Kunstwörter nicht wie die Knaben mit den Wissenschaften selber lernen, durchaus wöchentlich aus einem Kunstwörterbuche auswendig lernen und Erzählungen, worin solche Wörter aufgehäuft wären, ins Deutsche und Verstandene sollte übertragen lassen. Ich wünschte, es würde absichtlich ein deutsches Octavbändchen voll fremder Wörter sammt einem Sachwörterbuch dazu geschrieben. Die besten Weiber lesen träumend (die andern freilich schlafend)-sie kommen über die Gebirge eines Geistwerks so gleitend weich hinüber, als ein Seefahrer über die Bergrücken unten im Meer-keine fragt den Reichsanzeiger, was irgend ein Wort bedeute, nicht einmal den Mann;-aber eben diesem Gelübde des Stillschweigens, welches das Fragespiel als ein verbotenes ansieht, dieser Zufriedenheit mit Nachtgedanken, welche erst allmählich im zwanzigsten Buche die Bedeutung eines Kuntsworts des zweiten ablernt, soll vorgebogen werden. Sonst werden von ihnen die Bücher so gelesen, wie die Männer gehört.
