"Esperanto" is the name of the new Key Language which will enable those who use other languages to understand each other by the exercise of an irreducible minimum of study and labour. It possesses all the advantages of a natural tongue without its difficulties; it is musical, flexible, full of light and shade, and very rich. It lends itself

admirably to all forms of expression, being as well adapted to the translation of literary works as to commercial correspondence.

[ocr errors]

(2000 root-words form one's stock-in-trade.)

[ocr errors]

It is mastered in a few weeks Dr. Zamenhof (the inventor) in the course of his labours, found to his hand words innumerable which form a part of all European tongues, such as "algebra," arithmetic," "biography," botany,' flannel," ""diamond.' Many verbs have a common root, and beyond these the words chosen were always those which are the same in a majority of languages. So in Esperanto, we have algebro, aritmetiko, biografio, etc. Truly inter national therefore, in its vocabulary, lending itself to all forms of syntax, Esperanto is equally easy to all European nationalities. Its character of absolute neutrality, its simplicity, and at the same time its elegance, assure for it a triumph in the near future as an auxiliary language destined to be of great service in international communications.

There are already 100,000 adepts in this language, and travellers have been able to journey from extreme Siberia, through Finland, Sweden, France, Germany, and Russia, doing business as they passed with Esperantists in all these countries.

The 2 Parts-Accidence and Syntax, complete in 1 Vol. Cloth 2 6 "The letterpress used for the essentials of grammar is bold and plain, while that employed for subordinate and exceptional matter is smaller, but very distinct, and the typographical expedients for gaining attention to the more important details are carefully planned and consistently carried out. . . . The new Grammar is full in the exposition of the etymology and accidence, but it is in the syntax that the freshness of form and the excellence of plan are most apparent.... We commend it heartily."-Educational News.
