Hoffmann and Tobie, Elementary Lessons and Exercises in Colloquial French. Pronunciation, Conversation, Reading, Exercises, Dictation, Rhymes and Home Work. 34 pages. Crown 8vo. Cloth. 9d. Lessons I to VII. are introductory; from this point they are based on the Spring picture from Hölzel's well-known Series. [See also next page. Conversational Exercises and Object Lessons BASED ON HÖLZEL'S CONVERSATIONAL WALL PICTURES (see pages 157 to 161). It is of the highest importance to a pupil that his early training in any language should be connected with his life surroundings. The method here proposed presents him with the pictures of familiar objects, which, by giving him additional pleasure in the things themselves, enable the teacher to impress on the child's mind the foreign words for them, and help to develop the pupil's ability to think and to express himself in a strange tongue. Everyone who has learned a foreign language will readily appreciate the greater interest and consequent facilities afforded to the child when it hears the names of persons, animals and objects in pictures spoken in a foreign tongue, and learns also to converse in short easy phrases and sentences based on incidents suggested by the pictures. The lessons are carefully graduated and adapted to the intelligence of quite young pupils. L. DURAND, M. DELANGHE, Uebungen für die Deutsche Sprech stunde BEARBEITET VON and Bowen-Schnell. et F. In working out these Conversations on a View of London, the writers have kept as closely as possible within the limits of objects visible on the picture. As this picture, however, is the tenth of the Series, the writers have concluded that it would probably be used in the higher classes, and have therefore entered into some details with regard to St. Paul's, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. For the same reason special characteristics of the English have been occasionally referred to. Une Vue de Paris. Leçons de conversation française d'après le Tableau de Hölzel: Paris, par M. DELANGHE. GÉNIN and SCHAMANEK in their Text Books: "Conversations Françaises," has proved so successful for teaching purposes, that we have undertaken to produce a similar book in English. These depict everyday life and instruct children by an easy and entertaining process. Children are thereby induced to ask questions and to frame their own answers. The Summary, which shows at a glance the contents of each volume, is followed by a Vocabulary which, phased under different titles, attracts the attention and aids the memory. Following the Vocabulary, are given descrip. tions and questions, a conversation, a few exercises, and a story or poem.
