French Composition and Translation (continued).

Kastner, Elements of French Composition.

Progressive Method for Translating English into French. Introductory Hints, Comparison of French and English Syntaxes, Exercises on the Principal Rules, 125 Progressive Pieces for Translation, with Foot-notes and Special Vocabularies to each Piece of Translation, by V. KASTNER, M.A., Officier d'Académie, Formerly Professor of French, Victoria University, Manchester. 250 pages. Crown 8vo. Cloth

In the first part, a close comparison has been attempted of the French and English syntaxes, and while the principles common to both languages have been but slightly touched upon, considerable stress has been laid on the idiomatic structure of French. Numerous exercises have been added, with a view of impressing the Grammatical Rules on the memory. To meet the requirements of the case, it has been found necessary to make these Exercises consist chiefly of detached sentences, but care has been taken that each sentence should contain some interesting thought, or convey useful information.

The passages selected for translation have been freed from those peculiarities of construction and idiom which tend only to puzzle and discourage junior students. There is an excellent vocabulary. The continued use of this skilfully graded manual should show results beneficial to the student and satisfactory to the teacher."-Educational News.
