The Athenæum.-"We find them admirable for the purpose of introducing young readers to the works of good poets. There can be no doubt in the minds of those who are concerned with teaching English literature in the middle and higher forms of secondary schools that the biographical method of interpretation rouses an interest which disconnected selections of poetry can never attain. The series is well designed: the books are of about the right length, well printed, and contain roughly about 55 per cent. of biography, and 45 of selected poems or passages from poems."

There is no reason for restricting learning by heart to poetry, as is commonly done; passages of good prose should be learnt by heart also. Nor need all the pupils in a class invariably learn the same piece."

CHAPTER IV. THE STUDY OF PROSE FICTION.

CHAPTER V.-THE STUDY of the DRAMA.

CHAPTER VI.-THE STUDY OF CRITICISM AND THE VALUATION OF Literature.
APPENDIX-I. ON PERSONALITY IN LITERATURE; II. ON THE TREATMENT
of Nature in POETRY; III. THE STUDY OF THE ESSAY; IV. THE STUDY
OF THE SHORT STORY.

"An entirely admirable book. Mr. Hudson has placed in the fortunate reader's hands the clues to the fruitful and pleasant study of poetry, of fiction, of criticism, and of the drama. He tells us not what, but-and this is vastly more importanthow to read. No one can read this book without feeling how immensely interesting, how immensely worth while, the study of literature is."-Daily News.

"Mr. Hudson's compact little volume may be warmly recommended to all students of literature, in and out of universities. Few of either class have such opportunities of grasping the fundamentals of literary study as the University Extension' students for whom this introduction is provided."-Manchester Guardian.

“It forms an interesting and stimulating companion and supplement to the ordinary manuals of English rhetoric, by presenting problems and doctrines of literary culture in a fresh way. . . . At once well read and well reasoned, it should prove particularly acceptable to young students anxious to form a sound literary taste."-Scotsman.

Study Book in English Literature

From Chaucer to the close of the Romantic Period. By E. R. HOOKER. 325 pages.
Small crown 8vo, 3s. 6d.

EXTRACT FROM THE PREFACE.-"This book does not contain history of literature, literary biography, philosophy, or criticism. These things are already set forth in many excellent text-books. Teachers of English literature, however, need also a text-book of a different sort. Believing in the creed of modern pedagogy, and especially in that fundamental article, the importance of the inductive method, they have been obliged, in the absence of an adequate manual, to sacrifice much of their crowded time to preparing, each one for himself, assignments of reading, bibliographies, topics for study, and lists of essay subjects. . . . Most of the sections of the Study Book contain matter of five kinds a bibliography, a list of reading, notes to the teacher, topics for study, and essay subjects."
