French Conversation, Idioms, etc. (continued).

Bué, H., First Steps in French Idioms, with Notes, Examination
Papers, and One Thousand Phrases to be turned into Idiomatic
French, by HENRI BUÉ, B. ès L., Late Principal French
Master, Christ's Hospital, Horsham, etc. 192 pages. Cloth -

"Will be found extremely useful for students who wish to become acquainted with colloquial French. The words are arranged in alphabetical order, and the principal idiomatic phrases in which they occur are given, together with an English version. Excellent notes illustrate the origin of the various locutions, and a selection of one thousand sentences serves the purpose of examination tests."-School Board Chronicle.

Bué, Jules, Class Book of Comparative Idioms, containing 1800 Idiomatic Sentences, in 3 volumes: English, French and German. Each volume separately (about 150 pages). Cloth "The Class-Book of Comparative Idioms' recently issued by Messrs. Hachette is intended to supersede the ordinary dialogues which are so extensively used in schools at the present day. The French phrases and their English equivalents being printed in separate volumes, the reader will be able to employ with great advantage the materials thus placed within his reach, either for viva-voce instruction or as subjects for written translations; and particular care has been taken to exclude obsolete, unusual, or slang expressions."-Saturday Review.

Hoffman and Tobie, Elementary Lessons and Exercises in Colloquial French. Pronunciation, Conversation, Reading Exercises, Dictation, Rhymes and Home Work. 34 pp. Cr. 8vo. Cl. o 9 The Lessons are intended to be taught in class by the teacher to the pupils, and not "prepared" by the pupils to be heard by the teacher. The Home Work at the end of each Lesson is of a recapitulatory nature. Full answers are expected from the pupils, who should be required to repeat accurately the wording of the question. As far as concerns Grammar, all that is necessary is that the teacher should, at his or her discretion, draw the pupil's attention to a few elementary rules, and only as these are exemplified in the Lessons. Lessons I to VII. are introductory; from this point they are based on the "Spring" picture from Hölzel's well-known Series of Conversational Wall Charts. (See pages 130 et seq.)

"An admirable book for one who wishes to be able to appreciate the finer
distinctions in meaning and expression which make a phrase or saying
idiomatic in either language. As a rule, the renderings into French are
idiomatic too; but it needs only a slight examination of the work to see
that these curious forms of expressions are really untranslateable. There
are many instances, however, of a happy rendering; and the book is
instructive, as few books are, in the niceties of French conversation and
composition."-Scotsman.

"In using the books I lay great stress on explaining in English clearly what you are going to teach to your pupils. After this I teach the nounsonly those which represent a thing that I can show or make my pupils touch. That is why I have begun my lessons with the class-room, since it is there that my pupils live with me. I am so convinced of the ease with which learners retain the words of which they have seen the exact representation that I make use of pictures of the things which I cannot bring into the class-room. Take for instance the dialogues relating to the church, to the table, to the greengrocer's shop, and if you have representations of everything you will find the advantages at once. They have only the words to learn; the rest will come naturally, and thus much time will remain for other exercises and for conversation."-Extract from the Author's Preface. Smith, English Colloquialisms with their French Equivalents.

"The majority of handbooks devoted to French and English Collo-
quialisms approach the subject from the French side, that is to say, they
supply English translations, more or less idiomatic-frequently less-of
familiar phrases. For English students, however, there is far more practical
utility in the present compilation, which reverses the process just mentioned,
and gives him French equivalents for the English colloquialisms which are
most likely to occur to him in the ordinary course of conversation. The
compilation will be found useful for getting up those phrases of which
examiners are so fond, in which the same word occurs with different mean.
ings, as, for example, 'play' in 'playground,' 'playbill,' to 'play the fool,'
'to play truant,' and so forth."-Glasgow Herald.

"A large and useful collection for purposes of composition, evidently compiled with great care and trouble. Proverbs and proverbial expression are excluded."-University Correspondent.

As explained in the Preface, the main feature here is that Idiomatic expressions which relate to the same class of idea are grouped together according to their sense, and linked into a connected text, instead of being merely printed in a detached alphabetical list. The advantage of this method is that as two or three different expressions often convey the same meaning, they are learnt in one and the same effort, and the connected text makes them easier to understand and remember.

The volume contains more than 2,500 different expressions, all explained in easy and simple French, with Index at the end. It is intended for advanced students, who wish to understand French thoroughly, and will be found very helpful to those preparing for examinations such as the Diplo matic Service, the Army, Civil Service, Society of Arts, etc., etc. (For full particulars of M. THÉMOIN'S Books on the GOUIN METHOD, see pages 123, 124.)
