The board then proceeded to the test of the ball cartridges, caliber .30, model of 1906, manufactured at Frankford Arsenal specially for the national matches. Thirteen boxes of this ammunition, selected promiscuously from various lots, were furnished to the board. The test started at 8 a. m., July 2, 1919. Owing to the excellent weather conditions existing at that hour, it was decided to start the test at 1,000 yards, the test at that range to consist of firing five groups of 10 shots each from 20 rifles, 10 of these rifles being of Springfield Armory make and 10 of Rock Island Arsenal make. All these rifles were selected specially for use in the national matches, being selected and sent to the test from lots of 2,000 set aside for this purpose. Two machine rests were used, one Springfield rifle and one Rock Island rifle being fired simultaneously. Between each series of five groups rifles were changed, Springfield and Rock Island rifles alternating in the two rests. Between each five groups lots of ammunition were changed, so that in all 10 lots of ammunition were

tested, and each lot was tested in both a Springfield rifle and a Rock Island rifle. The results obtained are set forth in the tabulation

below.

The test of ball cartridges, caliber .30, model of 1906, at 600 yards was conducted on the morning of July 3, 1919. Five lots of ammunition were tested, including the lot which showed the best results at 1,000 yards and the lot which showed the poorest results at 1,000 yards. Each lot was tested in two rifles, one of Springfield make and one of Rock Island make, being fired five groups of 10 shots each in each rifle. In all, 50 groups were fired. Two machine rests were used, and the two makes of rifles alternated in the rests. Other conditions same as at 1,000 yards.

The test of ball cartridges, caliber .30, model of 1906, at 200 yards was conducted on the afternoon of July 3, 1919. Two lots of ammunition were tested, each lot being fired five groups of 10 shots each in one rifle of Springfield make and in one rifle of Rock Island make, four rifles being used in the test. In all, 20 groups were fired. Other conditions same as at 600 and 1,000 yards.
