The work contained six volumes. Volume I was published in 1776, volumes II and III were published in 1781, volumes IV, V, and VI in 1788–1789. Due to its comparative objectivity and extensive usage of primary sources, unusual for the time, the author’s methodology is considered to become an example for further historians, and Gibbon, thanks to this work, is called the first “contemporary historian of Ancient Rome”. |
