PREFACE.

In presenting Volume V of the Insurance Digest, a word may be necessary for the information of the profession. Six years ago I arranged with the proprietors of ROUGH NOTES, an insurance journal published at Indianapolis, to subscribe for all the law journals published in the English language, in this country or in Europe, and to furnish for that periodical a monthly digest of all decisions, and all editorial or contributed articles, in any way affecting insurance companies. There was such a demand that this matter, thus published, should be put in form of volume that, the second year, the monthly parts were compiled and revised and given to the public in a volume similar to this. Each succeeding year this compilation and revision has been made, and issued in this form. The demand for these volumes has constantly increased from those directly interested in the insurance business, and from the legal profession.

It is worthy of note to state that each volume has had an increased number of cases over its predecessor. The first volume contained 279 cases; this volume.has 431. This volume contains 86 pages more matter than did the first volume. These facts show the increasing value of the publication; and it is gratifying to know that the work has had such full appreciation.

The method first adopted of publishing the title of the case but once, and under the title giving all the points decided, has been followed from the first, as experience has proven it to be, by far, the most satisfactory method. It is often of importance to know all the points decided in a case that proper weight may be given to any point on which it may be cited. A careful index is given which is a key to all that is decided in any case.

In the Table of Cases reference is given to every periodical in which each case digested has been published up to the date of issuance of this volume.

I again express my obligation to Mr. Guilford A. Deitch, of the law office of Finch & Finch, for intelligent assistance in the preparation of this volume. Indeed, without his assistance, the volume could hardly be prepared by me in the activities of an engrossing practice. JOHN A. FINCH.
