IV. Translate

Fatebor vobis, etsi minus injuriae vestrae, quam mneae calamitatis, meminisse juvat, quum abessem, quotiescunque patria in mentem veniret, haec omnia occurrebant; colles, campique et Tiberis, et assueta oculis regio, et hoc coelum, sub quo natus educatusque essem: quae vos, Quirites, nunc moveant potius caritate sua, ut maneatis in sede vestra, quam postea, quum reliqueritis ea, macerent desiderio. Shew that future time is more accurately distinguished in Latin than in English. Give examples. What do you mean by the ablative absolute ? How is it best turned into English Idiom? Give examples.

Translate into Latin :

(a) Having defeated the Helvetii, Cæsar continued to pursue them for many miles.

(b) Messengers were sent to Rome to say that the Consul was defeated, that the camp was taken, and that the enemy had crossed the river.

La femme du bouvier comptait sur Alfred pour surveiller et pour retourner au besoin quelques pains placés sur la cendre chaude. Retenue elle-même hors de la cabane par d'autres soins, elle vit avec colère, à son retour, qu'Alfred n'avait pas bougé de sa place, tandis que les pains brûlaient déjà; et elle s'écria vivement: "Homme! qui que tu sois! à quoi pensezvous donc ? es-tu trop fier pour retourner nos pains?

Tu ne veux pas y faire attention maintenant, mais je sais bien que tu voudras en manger tout à l'heure." Alfred avait déjà eu le temps de réfléchir à tout ce que lui avait coûté son ancien orgueil; il eût été malséant de s'y laisser aller encore en cette occasion.

Bouvier cowherd; cendre ashes; bouger = to stir; déjà already; orgueil = pride; malséant = unbecoming; cabane = hut.

II. (a) Give the gender of père, vache, prudence, paix, livre; and the plural of fils, grandpère, cardinal.

(b) Give the feminine forms of nul, gros, vif, public, meilleur.

(c) Give the first person plural of the future of vouloir, sortir, tenir, parler, aller and venir. (d) Give instances of the definite article being used in French where it would not be used in English.

(e) What difference of meaning is there between plutôt and plus tôt, and between où and ou?

(f) Give the cardinal numbers from one to twenty-two, and the ordinal numbers from first to twentieth.

(g) Put in the plural the whole sentence "Un domestique avait beaucoup à souffrir du caractère inégal de son maître."

III. Translate into French;

(a) She had placed the loaves on the embers. (b) He was not thinking of what she had told him. (c) The king saw that it would be unbecoming. (d) Will you not give your attention?

(e) Take time to reflect on what I have told you. (f) See what your pride has cost you!

(g) If you do not give your attention the loaves will

burn.

(h) These children are too proud to do as they are

bid.

I. Translate

GREEK.

Καὶ οὐ μόνον γ ̓, ἔφη, οἱ ἰδιῶται τοῦτο ποιοῦσιν, ἀλλὰ καὶ πόλεις αἱ τῶν τε καλῶν μάλιστα ἐπιμελούμεναι καὶ τὰ αἰσχρὰ ἥκιστα προσιέμεναι, πολλάκις πολεμικῶς ἔχουσι πρὸς ἀλλήλας. ἰδιώτης = individual; ἐπιμελεῖσθαι = practise; ἀκρατής intemperate; πεφυκέναι = to be naturally.

Parse the words : ἔφη, καλῶν, δύναιντο.

II. (α) Decline fully τοῦτο γένος.

(6) Give the dative singular and plural of πόλις, φίλος, τιμή, λαμπάς, γένος.

(c) Give the first person singular of all the tenses of the active voice of γράφω.

III. Translate into Greek: (a) This is the man. (3) Your father and mother love you. (c) Give me the milk (γάλα n.). (α) My father has written the letter. () The mother or the daughter is dead (ἀποθνήσκω). (1) The boy was noble in disposition (ψυχή). (g) The king was constituted Lord of all Asia. Βασιλεύς ἅπας ὁ Ἀσία κύριος κατέστην. (h) Wise men learn many things from enemies. Απ' ἐχθρός πολύς μανθάνω ὁ σοφός.

Parse ἐπειρᾶτο, ὀργῆς, ἔπεμπον, μέγιστον, απολωλεκότες, ἔχοντες.

Give the different significations of iní followed by the dative case, and of karà followed by the accusative Give examples.

Compare μέγας, ὀλίγος, ῥᾴδιος, μέλας, κακὸς, avo, upwards, and μáλa, greatly.

Give some of the modes of action, denoted by the middle form of the verb in Greek.

Write out the present indicative, and the imperative of tiul, I am, and siu, I go.

GERMAN.

I. Translate

Wenn ich auf mein früheres und mittleres Leben zurückblicke und nun in meinem Alter bedenke, wie wenige noch von denen übrig sind, die mit mir jung waren, so fällt mir immer der Sommeraufenthalt in einem Bade ein. Sowie man ankommt, schliesst man Freundschaften mit solchen, die schon eine Beit lang dort waren und die in den nächsten Wochen wieder abgehen. Der Verlust ist schmerzlich. Nun hält man sich an die zweite Generation, mit der man eine Weile fortlebt und sich auf das innigste verbindet. Aber auch diese geht und lässt uns einsam mit der dritten, mit der man auch gar nichts zu thun hat.

III. Translate into German
