Sheriffs. Cork now became a Town-Corporate, the Sheriffs being formerly called Bailiffs. 1629 This year a defperate battle was fought near this City, by an incredible number of Stairs, who made a most alarming noise in the air; several hundred wounded ones fell on the ground and died. 1633 October 14th, North-gate Bridge and the Caftle thereon, fell down, occafioned by a great flood in the River. 1676 The South Bridge rebuilt by the Corporation, 1678 Draw-bridges erected near the North and South Gaols, by order of Lord Shannon, Governor of the City. 1680 The County Court-houfe fell down, the day that Doctor Creagh, Titular Bifhop of Cork, was tried, fome were killed, and feveral others had their legs and arms broke. The Court was rebuilt the year following. 1683 A fevere froft; the River Lee frozen many weeks; carriages paft over from the Ferry-flip to the Eaft-Marfh. 1686 The Earl of Tyrconnel, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, came to Cork, and was entertained by Chrif topher Crofts, Efq; Mayor of the City. |
