Bright shining from His throne above
Upon our sinful way.

2 Prais'd be His name on high!
When helper there was none,
For us, He did himself deny,
And gave His dearest Son.

3 What have I brought Thee home
To pay my mighty debt?
Ah, me! afar from Thee I roam,
And all Thy love forget!

4 Yet still, with every day,
Thou goest on to bless,
To put amendment in our way,
And mercy, grace, and peace.
5 This day, O God, my life,

Heaven's gate has open stood,
And blessings plentiful and rife,
Thy hand to me hath show'd.
6 My God, Thou art all love :

Teach me Thy love to know!
To do Thy will makes heav'n above:
Teach me Thy will to do!

IV. MORNING AND EVENING.

211.

Morning.

1 A
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

WAKE, my soul, and with the sun,

Thy daily stage of duty run;

L.M.

2 Wake and lift up thyself, my heart;
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who all night long unwearied sing
High praise to their eternal King.
3 Glory to Thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast refresh'd me while I slept;
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

4 Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;

Scatter my sins as morning dew;

Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

5 Direct, control, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.

212.

Morning Song.

MY God was with me all the night,

And gave me sweet repose;

My God did watch, even whilst I slept,

Or I had never rose.

C.M.

2 Sweet rest hath gained that strength to me,
Which labour did devour:
My body was in weakness sown,
But it is raised in power.

3 Lord, for the mercies of the night,
My humble thanks I pay;

And unto Thee I dedicate
The first fruits of the day.

4 Let this day praise Thee, O my God,
And so let all my days:
And, O, let mine eternal day,
Be thine eternal praise.

NEW every morning is the love

L.M.

Our wakening and uprising prove; Through sleep and darkness safely brought, Restored to life, and power, and thought. 2 New mercies, each returning day, Hover around us while we pray; New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven. 3 If on our daily course our mind

Be set to hallow all we find,

New treasures still, of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.

4 We need not bid, for cloister'd cell,
Our neighbour and our work farewell;
Nor strive to wind ourselves too high
For sinful man beneath the sky.
5 The trivial round, the common task,
Would furnish all we ought to ask;
Room to deny ourselves; a road
To bring us daily nearer God.
6 Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us, this and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.

214.

Evening Hymn.

1 THE night is come.

Like to the day,

Depart not Thou, great God, away;
Let not my sins, black as the night,
Eclipse the lustre of Thy light:
Keep my horizon, for to me

The sun makes not my day, but Thee!
2 While I do rest, my soul advance,
And make my sleep a holy trance;
That so I may, when rest is wrought,
Awake into some holy thought,
And with as active vigour run
My course, as doth the nimble sun.
3 Sleep is a death; O make me try,
By sleeping what it is to die;
And then as gently lay my head
Upon my grave as now my bed.
Howe'er I rest, great God, let me
Awake again at last with Thee!

SUN

of

Evening.

my soul, thou Saviour dear, It is not night if Thou be near: O may no earth-born cloud arise

112th.

To hide Thee from Thy servants' eyes.
2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep
Our wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be our last thought-how sweet to rest
For ever on our Saviour's breast.

L.M.

3 Abide with me from morn to eve,
For without Thee I cannot live.
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

4 Come near and bless us when we wake, Ere through the world our way we take; Till in the ocean of Thy love,

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

216.

Evening.

1 GLORY to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Under Thine own almighty wings.
2 Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 O may my soul on Thee repose,

L.M.

And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more vigorous make,
To serve my God when I awake.

dread

4 Teach me to live that I may
The grave as little as my bed:
Teach me to die, that so I may
With joy behold the judgment day.

5 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below :
