PREFATORY WORD.

HE CENTENARY OF THE FISH-STREET CHURCH was observed by various Services held in April 1869. At two of these some of the following pages were read. A few words, only, here are necessary. The Rev. George Lambert left to his children a diary, in twelve volumes foolscap quarto, extending from * 1781 to his decease in 1816. On this diary the following Memoir is based. It would have been easy to have made a large volume. It has not been easy to make a small one. At this I have aimed-gathering from Mr. Lambert's voluminous diary the points of interest to the general reader, and seeking to give a view of him in his various relations of life.

It is matter of regret that so few particulars can be secured of the life of the Rev. Thomas Stratten. For some hints of his early years, I am indebted to the statement sent by him to the authorities of Hoxton College when seeking
