THE author of this little work has called it a Manual of the Anatomy and Physiology of the Mind;-of anatomy and physiology, because it is an attempt to do for the mind what anatomy and physiology do for the body, namely, to point out its various powers and operations, the place which they hold in the mental organism, and their connection with one another. He has called it a Manual, because it does not detail the trains of reasoning by which mental phenomena have been ascertained, and their bearing on the general system explained. Those who desire to dip more deeply into these reasonings, the author would refer to Dugald Stewart's historical essay "On the Progress of Metaphysical Science," written for the last edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, and published also separately, as a Catalogue Raisonné, where he will find the principal books on the various metaphysical topics noticed and described.
